Here at TPA we are very excited to be able offer the position of Scientist - Thin Films
Purpose of the Job:
The chosen candidate will be developing innovative thin film processes to advance our "cutting-edge" energy materials development of metal. This position requires people with technical and materials processing development skills who want to be challenged, have a passion for success, and a constant drive to exceed expectations.
Key responsibilities:
* Be a hands-on developer of processing of technologies from concept to product launch.
* In particular, actively participate and provide scientific and technical expertise by:
- Delivering improved materials processes for the formation of thin metal oxide films.
- Generate enhanced understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved.
- Drive the project to meet the technical objectives within agreed timescales.
- Work as a part of the team that will manufacture prototype levels of the next generation technology and product.
- Have a can-do attitude and be flexible in working schedules to get the job done.
- Complete background research into innovative materials processing routes and create strategies for development.
- Create, implement and support strategies to characterise the performance and stability of the materials features.
- Present technical progress and timing.
* Be a trouble-shooter providing solutions to technical challenges faced in projects.
* Communicate key information and recommendations to influence technical decisions and strategy.
* Support the company's in-house analytical characterisation and data analysis capabilities to ensure they are developed sufficiently and used and maintained effectively to meet materials characterisation requests.
Qualification, Knowledge and Experience
Required skills:
* PhD or Masters in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.
* Scientific knowledge/understanding of the following:
* solution and organometallic chemistry, sol-gels, colloids, colloidal stabilisation, in particular related to the rare earths and transition metals.
* Thin-film processing techniques such as spin coating, dip coating, jetting, screen printing.
* Experience with some of the following materials characterisation techniques: NMR, FT-IR, UV-VIS, SEM with EDS/WDX, XRD, PSD, STA/DTA, BET, dilatometry, FIB-SEM, XRF, ACIS/EIS, electrochemical testing, indentation and mechanical properties testing, 3D tomography, SIMS, ICP-MS.
* Working knowledge of electro-ceramics, fuel cells and electrochemistry.
* Entrepreneurial and can-do attitude to meet the goals of a fast-paced technology development environment.
Highly desirable skills:
* Additional knowledge/understanding of the following:
* metal oxide powder and nanoparticle synthesis, ceramics materials and processing, powder dispersion and ink formulation.
* Experience with rheology measurements and other ink and thin film characterisation tools.
* Experience in working with high volume ceramic manufacturing.
* Expertise in 6-sigma/DoE techniques.
* Demonstrable problem-solving skills
Internal & External Relationships:
* Part of the Energy Materials (RnD) Department and the Process Team.
* Regular contact, work quality monitoring, support and development discussions with the Process Team Lead.
* Daily contact with the project team members and technical lead.
* Regular contact with the other members of the Energy Materials Department.
* Transfer of successful developments to manufacturing teams.
* Occasional technical discussions and updates to technology partners.
* Regular progress reporting to the technical management team and program management office.
* Working with external experts to develop knowledge and capability in processes and characterisation methods.
