We are looking to recruit a Legal Officer (Claims), to work for United Utilities on a contract basis for 4 months initially.

You will be experienced in dealing with all claims against the Company. You will also be responsible for investigating and determining liability, negotiating settlements and will have conduct of all stages of legal proceedings.

Job Accountabilities

* Responsible for dealing with a high volume of legal cases on claims matters - mostly precedent and statute based but with professional experience and knowledge required to react to facts and laws of the matter (whilst similar, cases never quite the same)
* Extensive liaison with the business, customers, the courts and advisers.
* Investigate liability, determine quantum and negotiate settlement of all third party claims arising out of the Company's activities.
* Conduct and complete all stages of legal proceedings including preparation of pleadings, discovery of documents, preparing witness statements, instructing expert witnesses, undertaking advocacy where appropriate, briefing Counsel and preparing for trial.
* Ensure the recovery of money due to the Company including insurers and other organisations legally compelled to contribute to claim costs.
* Ensure full indemnity is received by the Company in respect of all claims submitted under the Company's external insurance programme.
* Maintain the computer database relating to own caseload, including the review and maintenance of accurate claims reserves and risk management information.
* Assist the Claims Manager in providing Project Managers with estimates of the financial and public relations implications of undertaking various engineering solutions arising out of the Capital Programme.

Knowledge and Skills

* CILEX qualified (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) or equivalent qualification or experience in lieu of qualification.
* Understanding of relevant legal processes and governance
* Experience in a claims environment
* The post holder will have a good knowledge of pre-action protocols and the Civil Procedure Rules.
* Experience of computer applications is required.
* A customer focused approach together with excellent written and oral communication skills is essential, as well as a good team player
