Aberdeen Cyrenians began life 53-years ago as a soup kitchen organised by students from the University of Aberdeen. Since then, they have grown to become a pioneer in homelessness, complex care and support needs services and mental health support. The charity has supported over 50,000 people in its time and continues supporting the vulnerable and those going through overwhelming and traumatic circumstances in Aberdeen.

From rough sleepers and people fleeing unsafe home environments to people who find it difficult to maintain their tenancy due to mental health or addiction issues and ex-prisoners with nowhere to go as well as those in crisis who find themselves vulnerable and at risk of losing their home and those that want to remain independent and need support to stay within their home. Aberdeen Cyrenians provides support and assistance to them all. Aberdeen Cyrenians has a history of innovative and creative care services. They pioneered the first ‘wet’ hostel, where residents could drink safely while engaging services to tackle underlying needs, and this is now a globally used model. The charity also opened the first women’s hostel in Aberdeen.

Organisational growth and innovation in care and support services continue at Aberdeen Cyrenians and in 2020 they won commissioned services as a key partner of an innovative third sector led consortium for Care at Home. The charity is fully committed to supporting people going through overwhelming and traumatic circumstances now and in the future. Recently, the exceptional work of volunteers at Aberdeen Cyrenians in helping achieve these goals was honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

The Corporate Services Team enable the front-line teams to do what they do - support vulnerable people when they need it most. They provide the back-office support that keeps the charity running. They pay the bills, provide people and HR support, manage facilities, undertake maintenance, bid for and win new work, ensure legal compliance and raise the funds required to keep the organisation running.

The Fundraising and Communications Manager will work within this small and friendly team to lead and implement a dynamic fundraising strategy that will maximise income generation from all income streams including corporates, events, trusts and foundations, individuals, major donors, legacies and the community for both restricted and unrestricted funds. They will also take the lead on and manage all aspects of Aberdeen Cyrenians communications, brand and identity, including the development and delivery of a communications plan aligned to their activities and campaigns.

The Fundraising and Communications Manager at Aberdeen Cyrenians must have a track record of success in fundraising or communications management (ideally both) and be experienced in managing a team of people who operate with different goals and objectives. Leading and implementing a dynamic fundraising strategy will require experience across multiple funding streams and a strong understanding of the current fundraising environment and issues, particularly issues surrounding fundraising for social injustices. Communication and relationship-building with a wide range of people drive the need for excellent communication skills and this includes strong written communication skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely, using appropriate language. Experience in public relations and marketing will be required. Managing all aspects of communications, brand and identity allows for working creatively, especially when designing and producing presentations. The role requires someone who is highly organised, capable of prioritising workloads effectively and planning to meet deadlines. Anyone who decides to apply must be able to demonstrate, respect and embrace the aims and values of the work Aberdeen Cyrenians carry out.
