Nicholas Howard Limited are delighted to be recruiting for a new and exciting role as a Structural Biology and Biophysics Research Scientist.
We are currently seeking a self-motivated scientist with experience in the field of Protein Production, Structural Biology and Biophysics. The successful candidate will be joining a team of biophysicists and structural biologists focused on delivery of transformative medicines for a range of serious genetic diseases and conditions with an unmet medical need. You will be working closely with teams across the company in our early stage portfolio. This position provides the candidate with a world-leading opportunity to learn and develop skills in drug discovery in a patient-focused environment.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate relevant academic or industrial experience with challenging targets such as protein complexes and / or membrane proteins. An ability to critically assess the scientific literature, design and run your own experiments is a key feature for this role. An innovative and "can-do" attitude is essential for working in our high throughput and high impact team. You will have strong hands-on experience in mammalian protein expression in mammalian or Baculovirus expression systems and purification of challenging targets. Practical expertise in solving and interpreting structures of macromolecules using techniques such as cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography with particular application to membrane proteins and /or large protein complexes will be an essential component of this role. Hands-on experience in a broad range of biophysical or biochemical techniques, preferably using high throughput methods, would also be an advantage.
You will be part of a growing, high impact team exploring and implementing new ideas in protein production, structural biology and biophysics to increase efficiencies and drive innovation. You will be working collaboratively with multiple interdisciplinary teams both on site here in the U.K. and globally, to understand and fulfil the demands of the specific projects by establishing efficient work plans and developing new protocols.
The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to contribute to high impact and strategic science across our early research portfolio. As a key player within multi-disciplinary drug discovery teams, you will be exposed to every aspect of drug discovery and development in one of the world's leading biotechnology companies with an uncompromising commitment to patients.
Key Responsibilities:
* Maintaining an in depth understanding of the biochemistry, molecular structure and wider role of each target in disease through critical analysis of the literature, working closely with our disease biology teams.
* Purification of proteins and other macromolecules for structural, biophysics and high throughput assays.
* Determination of structure of macromolecules by X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and / or cryo-ET.
* Biophysical and biochemical studies of macromolecules using a range of methods for target engagement and small molecule modulator development.
Key Requirements:
* Ph.D. level Biochemist or Biologist with extensive proven laboratory experience from similar roles in the pharmaceutical industry setting and / or in academia.
* A track record in delivering high impact results in biophysics, structural biology and protein science within academic or pharmaceutical industry settings as demonstrated through a strong publication history, supported by evidence of individual contributions to projects.
* Practical experience of recombinant protein expression in several mature platforms including mammalian (stable and transients), insect cells and E.coli. Strong practical experience in protein purification including IMAC, IEC, SEC, IEX, HIC, fusion protein cleavage technologies, use of AKTA system-based chromatography.
* Practical experience in structural biology, using X-ray crystallography and / or electron cryomicroscopy with a focus on membrane proteins and / or protein complexes.
* Experience in the use of a range of biophysical methods, particularly in the context of assessing small molecule target engagement.
* Familiarity with high-throughput methods for assessing protein expression and purification yields and quality.
* Strong understanding of molecular biology, protein engineering, mass spectrometry, assay development, electrophysiology and / or high-throughput screening workflows would be an advantage.
* Strong interpersonal and troubleshooting skills.
* Demonstrate excellent record keeping, communication and presentation skills.
* Demonstrable leadership for promoting innovation in those techniques and demonstrable abilities to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
