Breaking News/TV Reporter - Newcastle

Closing date: 21/05/2021

We're looking for a reporter to join the biggest news website in the North East, ChronicleLive, to focus on live news reporting and TV features.

ChronicleLive is a modern, trusted news website that is fiercely proud of the North East and its passionate people and places. We exist to keep readers informed about everything happening in the North East, both good and bad; what's planned and going on in the region; and to champion and celebrate everything that makes the North East special, covering stories from Berwick to Barnard Castle, Seahouses to Seaham and everything in between, not least the vibrant cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. Our digital storytelling is responsive, trustworthy and authentically North East and proud.

Live coverage is a vital part of life in our digital newsroom. In this role, you'll be part of a breaking news team producing live rolling coverage for web, app, newsletter and social media audiences throughout the day.

This fast-paced team runs live breaking news, traffic and travel, weather and court blogs, posting updates, interacting with readers via social media, and writing and sharing breaking stories quickly, accurately and with flair.

You'll also support our TV and Showbiz Editor Simon Duke in creating engaging TV features and content about the shows and broadcast events everyone in the North East is talking about.

What will the role involve?

  • Build, write, curate, publish and share daily breaking news live blogs over a rota-based mix of early and late shifts covering weekends on a rota
  • Write breakout stories and run live blogs on breaking news events and incidents as the news agenda dictates
  • Be confident to self-publish, and give confidence to local content editors that self-publishing is acceptable, in breaking news scenarios
  • Ensure content lines from live blogs are shared quickly, accurately and engagingly on brands' social media platforms and via apps and newsletters
  • Source, write and share engaging, audience-focused TV content features, using search tools to understand what readers are talking about and social media to reflect TV debates as they happen
  • Build communities online and in real life to share stories with once published, and engage with readers about those stories as a trusted authority on breaking news on social media
  • Reply promptly, politely and helpfully to questions and information coming in via social media or comments regarding developing stories
  • Tell stories in many different ways, including (but not limited to) real-time live blogs, article format, video, audio and pictures

Who are we looking for?

We will consider applications from both trainee and senior journalists for this position.

NCTJ-accredited senior or preliminary qualifications, including media law, are essential, and experience of live news reporting is desirable.

You'll need a sharp news sense and excellent social media skills, together with outstanding accuracy and attention to detail as you'll be publishing breaking news updates in live blogs directly and at pace in a very busy city newsroom in the heart of Newcastle.

You'll make key decisions on when to launch live blogs for big stories, and know how to maintain momentum as audiences flock to our sites. You'll need to be creative and energetic, with excellent social media savvy and digital publishing skills.

The role involves being comfortable working at pace and under deadline pressure. You'll also need to be flexible covering shifts on a rota, including weekends.
