Connect2Luton in partnership with Luton Borough Council are recruiting for a Junior Childcare Solicitor. This is a temporary position for 6 months with possibility of extension.

About the role

The Social Services Team provides a comprehensive service in relation to child care (care cases, pre-proceedings and other related matters).

The postholder will play an important part in supporting this work and will handle their own caseload and be responsible for conducting child care related litigation on behalf of the Council. The postholder will need to maintain an up to date awareness of developments in the law associated with their area of responsibility and actively assist in the promotion of continuous improvement in order to achieve Best Value in the provision of legal services to the Council.

The post holder will provide legal advice and will be responsible for a personal legal social services caseload in relation to both child care, adult social care and related matters.

Key Responsibilities

Give legal advice, to Officers and Members of the Council as required to allow them to make decisions and achieve solutions to problems that comply with the law.
Carry out other legal work as required, including the drafting of any necessary documents to implement decisions taken in pursuance of the Council's functions.

Represent the Council before Courts and Tribunals as an unsupervised advocate conducting.
Exercise judgement in accordance with broad guidance laid down by manager.
Participate in projects and assist in such corporate, interdivisional or interdepartmental work as may be required.Skills and Experience

Some experience of advocacy before Courts and/or Tribunals including, in relation to childcare cases
Able to demonstrate ability to undertake legal work with some supervision

Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Should be able to elicit relevant information in moderately complex situations and translate it into effective documents.
Applicants must be solicitors or barristers qualified in England, (or have completed the academic and training stages for qualification) and, in the case of solicitors, hold (or be able to obtain) a current practising certificate or, in the case of Barristers enjoy (or be able to obtain) rights of audience under paragraphs 402.1(c) and 402.2 of the Code of Conduct for Barristers in England and Wales.
