Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Commercial Manager to join our Gas & Water business unit to work in Cockermouth, Cumbria.

Role Purpose:

* Commercial Leadership of the 70m Williamsgate Water Treatment Works within advanceJV Balfour Beatty/MWH Treatment on behalf of United Utilities;

* Significant experience in minimising the costs of large complex projects and enhancing value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality;

* Experienced Subcontract and Procurement management. With detailed knowledge and experience of NEC form of contract;

* Have a track record of managing a commercial team and ideally be a Chartered Member of the RICS, ICES or CIOB, and a mentor to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified.

What you'll be doing

As a Commercial Manager you will:

* Project Commercial Lead, member of the Project Senior Leadership Team;

* Responsible for key decisions relating to commercial matters alongside the senior operational team;

* Develop and maintain relationships with clients, subcontractors and key stakeholders;

* Produce detailed monthly reports and Cost Value Reconciliations (CVR) as required by the Joint Venture;

* Produce and maintain a detailed Commercial Action Plan, tracking and forecasting actions related to value and expenditure, including detailed schedules of Subcontractor liabilities and use of IFS based cost analyses and Cemar NEC contract management;

* Attend weekly progress and risk reduction meetings with the client and subcontractors;

* Support the Project Manager and others to identify, quantify, and mitigate risks to cost and value;

* Work with the Project Manager to ensure accurate planning of expenditure;

* Liaise with operational and engineering staff to ensure site records are kept to the standard required;

* Accountable for the administration of all contracts;

* Produce and issue all commercial notices, to both the Client and Subcontractors, as required by the NEC form of contract;

* Produce Subcontract documentation including contract notifications, purchase order amendments, applications for payment and acceptance of programme;

* Management of subcontract works packages including, interim assessments of the amount due, subsequent change management and applications for payment;

* Manage change in a timely manner in accordance with the NEC form of contract, including the production and submission of General Communications, Early Warnings Notifications and Compensation Event Quotations;

* Produce, submit, and agree monthly applications, to the Client, in accordance with the contract;

* Interpret and critically evaluate expenditure reports produced by internal cost systems;

* Management of teams and the development of all commercial staff to ensure they reach their potential and support their wellbeing.

Who we're looking for

Personal Qualities and Experience:

Essential qualities / experience:

* An organised, innovative, creative and experienced Commercial Manager with experience of managing projects to final account and close out;

* Someone who is innovative in the way risks and opportunities can be managed through commercial terms;

* A good understanding of NEC commercial agreements, and the ability to successfully work through potential dispute;

* Excellent time management skills (to get things done to a high standard very quickly);

* Experience of managing and developing a high performing commercial team;

* Resilience and a determination to succeed and grow within the Rail & Utility Business.

Desired qualities:

* Experience of utility civil engineering projects, with a preference to Water is desired;

* Qualifications: Degree level or equivalent in a Quantity Surveying or associated discipline relative to the role.
