About what we do:

The Government Office for Science (Go Science) ensures that government decision making is informed by the best scientific evidence and strategic thinking. We directly advise the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet as well as improve the quality and use of scientific evidence across Government. We also support the Independent Council for Science and Technology and continue to develop the Government Science and Engineering (GSE) profession.

About the role

You'll play a central role in our new Emerging Technology Analysis team, developing new methods to identify and present information on new technologies, carrying out quantitative analysis and conducting research to inform policies.

You'll influence how emerging policy develops at the centre of government and work across disciplines to support long-term policy making from the economy to national security.

Building strong links with other analysts across government is also a key part of the role, as you'll find new ways to share technology intelligence, reports and data in a user-friendly way.

You'll also lead on developing your team's data sources, manage its analytical pipelines and implement digital approaches for sharing information across Whitehall.

Alongside your duties, you'll be given space to develop new skills and support your longer-term career development.

About our requirements

It's essential that you can build and test resilient, future-proof data products to support analysis and information sharing based on feeds from multiple systems (for example, through APIs). You'll also be competent in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL or similar, as well as cloud-based platforms.

A knowledge of testing and documentation standards for complex programs and scripts is also important. You should be comfortable translating concepts into non-technical language and able to deal with a wide range of stakeholders.

An interest in horizon-scanning and an understanding of how science and technology can improve government policy is preferred but not essential.

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.
