Confident interviewers make the census

The census is a survey of the entire population of England and Wales that happens every 10 years. It's run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

The information we collect is used to make decisions that affect everyone - things like how many schools, surgeries and hospitals we need.

We're now hiring temporary interviewers who can travel throughout England and Wales where extra resources are needed. You will gain valuable experience and help to improve the communities you visit.

The role

Do you enjoy speaking to people from all walks of life? Are you willing to travel at short notice? Our mobile team travel around England and Wales, wherever their services are needed, and complete doorstep interviews in that particular area.

In this important, temporary role, you will be given an initial location to work in. You will then travel to various locations around England and Wales, wherever extra resource is required.

You will list and record all properties within a particular area on a smartphone, knock on doors, and encourage residents to complete a doorstep interview with you.

Some people will have concerns about completing the questionnaire. That's where your excellent communication or customer service skills will come in. You will reassure these people, and make repeated visits to addresses as necessary until you get a response.

You will work independently, but will have the support of a team leader, who will travel to the same locations as you. They will help you settle into your role, and provide support and assistance as and when you need it.

About you

You have excellent customer service skills and are confident speaking with members of the public and the local community. There are occasions when this work might be challenging, so you will need to remain calm and professional if that happens. Good written and verbal skills in English are important (Welsh would be an advantage if you are working in Wales). You should be well organised, full of initiative, and feel confident using a smartphone and various applications.

You need to be able to travel throughout England and Wales with no less than 24 hours' notice. You must also be prepared to stay overnight, and for longer periods, as required. You will also need to be able to travel to, and around, your assigned areas. These distances will vary. We will provide support with arranging accommodation, and expenses will be paid.

You will need to hold a current full UK driving licence for this role, with use of a motor vehicle, insured for business use. We will pay a mileage allowance and travel expenses within your work area.

People make the census. If you are a confident communicator who is interested in making Census 2021 a success for everyone, apply for a census coverage mobile interviewer role.

We can only employ you if you are eligible to work for the Civil Service. Find out more about the Civil Service nationality rules.

We will ensure we follow all appropriate government guidelines to keep you safe whilst working for ONS. Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including hand sanitiser and face masks will be provided to all staff; for your safety, you will be required to use and wear that PPE, as instructed, when you are working. Social distancing will be maintained
throughout the operation
