People Engagement Manager

REPORTING TO
Senior People Engagement Manager
JOB PURPOSE
As a key member of the People Engagement (HR) team, the successful candidate will be an integral part of the business providing a comprehensive people related advice to the legal practice areas. As well as demonstrating a broad range of experience, including managing complex employee relations case work and managing change, you will have the ability to build relationships, influence and communicate in a fast paced environment in order to provide a first class service to the business. This role will involve supporting colleagues across all our offices and reasonable travel will be required.
This is an exciting and challenging role. We are looking for an individual who has operated in a similar post and can work on their own initiative, is proactive, resilient and committed to doing an excellent job. The People Engagement Manager will also be responsible for supervising and developing junior members of the People Engagement Team.
The successful candidate will join the team as we embark on a new strategic period and will be involved in delivering a number of new projects and initiatives as well as leading on key parts of our people engagement strategy - namely the contract we have with our people.
The successful candidate will ensure all people engagement activities promote and maintain the brand of the firm and our values.
CORE TASKS
Employee relations and general people engagement
* Act as the first point of contact for two legal practice areas, meeting regularly with the practice and group heads, consistently providing commercial and pragmatic advice.
* Working autonomously to provide support and guidance on all aspects of employee relations. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in handling grievances, conducting disciplinary investigations and hearings, running absence management cases, and managing exits.
* Provide support and guidance on all aspects of performance management. This includes supporting the annual appraisal process, working with each area on performance development plans and resolving issues where necessary.
* Coaching line managers in all people processes to ensure best practice and employee engagement is enhanced.
* Maintain up to date HR knowledge to ensure the firm complies with employment legislation in all of our people related activity.
Recruitment and retention
* Work closely with the practice and group heads to establish resource requirements and provide practical solutions in relation to this.
* Co-ordinate all recruitment activity from drafting the job specification through to making the offer of employment, with support from Advisors and Assistants.
* Provide People Engagement support at interviews, coaching and guiding less experienced hiring managers as well as preparing and facilitating assessments.
* Build and maintain positive relationships with preferred recruitment consultants as well as negotiating fees and effectively managing the allocated recruitment budget.
* Review succession planning through identifying resource gaps, carrying out risk analysis and mapping out succession plans for each practice area.
* Work with the practice and group heads to identify candidates for promotion and provide support with preparation of objective setting and business cases.
Reward
* Alongside the Compensation and Benefits team, provide advice on market and competitors rates, key trends and assistance with the annual salary review across all business support areas. Provide guidance and input to help determine recommended salary levels for individuals together with supporting the process of salary change notifications.
Employee engagement and training
* Understand and agree suitable training requirements for individuals and teams, being mindful of costs as well as the benefit to the employees and the firm.
* Work with the practice heads to identify, manage and nurture talent in the business.
* Help to plan, organise and facilitate practice away days including follow up work with teams where appropriate.
Team management
* Regularly meet with team members to review workloads and provide advice and guidance where required. Ensure there is an even distribution of tasks and that all key deadlines are met.
* Regularly review team performance through catch ups, quarterly reviews, appraisal meetings and regularly reviewing progress against objectives.
Project work
* Work alongside the People Engagement Manager team to identify, drive forward and deliver projects in line with the People Engagement strategy.
In addition to the core tasks highlighted above candidates should also be aware of Brodies' information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
* Experienced People Engagement (HR) Manager with a proven track record in delivering business focussed and solution-based advice. With an up to date, high level of expertise and experience in all People Engagement related matters.
* Previous experience of managing others is preferred and have a strong working knowledge of handling complex employee relations case work.
* Previous experience in a professional services environment is desirable.
* Strong academics which ideally include a business related degree and ideally CIPD qualified.
* Computer literate - particularly in Word, Excel and Microsoft Office.
SKILLS
* Ability to build strong working relationships at all levels
* Needs to be sharp and commercially strong with the ability to identify issues and suggest pragmatic solutions quickly.
* Ability to influence and persuade at all levels and display excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Can demonstrate experience of working successfully in a fast paced and challenging environment.
* Can scope out project plans and identify and implement key requirements for project delivery.
* Ability to juggle multiple priorities and a demanding workload, and able to adopt a flexible and proactive approach to work duties.
