Senior Lecturer Enhanced Teaching, Welsh Language Education Provision AC04312

Salary: GP Educator Scale, or NHS Consultant equivalent

Contract: 0.2 FTE (2 sessions of 3.5 hours/ week), This is a fixed term position for 3 years
Location: This position will be based at the Singleton Campus, Swansea.

The role provides an exciting opportunity to join Swansea University Medical School, one of the UK’s leading Medical Schools.

Swansea University Medical School provides an interdisciplinary approach, educating and training the next generation of doctors, life scientists, and health professionals. It collaborates with the NHS, business and the third sector in a spirit of open innovation and has established itself as a world-class place to learn, research and innovate.  The Medical School ranks 1st in the UK for research environment and 2nd for overall research quality (REF2014-2021) and 3rd for Medicine (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021).

The Medical School became the first department within the University to achieve an Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) Athena SWAN Charter Silver Award in 2015, and was re-awarded in 2019 in recognition of its commitment to equality. The University also holds the Athena SWAN Charter Silver Award.

Swansea University has been awarded the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence and Student Outcome Framework (TEF) Gold award to recognise its excellent teaching standards.

Swansea University Medical School embed Welsh language and culture into the medical programme. Fluent Welsh speakers are able to complete parts of their course in Welsh and are encouraged to view their bilingualism as an additional ability that can be used to provide a better quality of service to Welsh-speaking patients in clinical settings. Non-Welsh speakers receive support and guidance to build confidence, understanding and familiarity with Welsh language and culture as they train and work in Wales. This approach aims to increase awareness of the linguistic needs and barriers faced by health services world-wide, with recognition and respect for language as a healthcare need not novelty.

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme has a number of Welsh speakers, both in the academic and clinical Faculty and in management. We are looking for a fluent and confident Welsh speaking clinician, with a real desire to support use of the Welsh Language in clinical settings across Wales, to work within our Welsh Language Support Team. Your role will be to ensure that Welsh Language Support is fully clinically integrated and embedded into the GEM programme and its associated clinical placements. In conjunction with this, the role includes contributions to the RRHiME programme (Rural and Remote Health in Medical Education). This is a track providing students with the opportunity to focus elements of the GEM programme in rural and remote parts of Wales. This includes clinical placements and student-selected projects.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or further professional qualification in a relevant subject area or a degree and relevant professional experience. They will also have a recognised teaching qualification that would lead to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or a commitment to achieve this.

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all of its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, religion and belief, sex (gender), sexual orientation. The School has an under-representation of men in the areas of research, so would particularly encourage applications from these backgrounds. Appointments will always be made on merit.

A satisfactory DBS certificate must be provided before a start date can be confirmed.

Applicants are asked to provide a completed online application providing evidence against the essential criteria in the recruitment documentation.  Applicants should also attach to the application 2 separate documents:
1.  a Curriculum Vitae;
2.  a statement detailing your aspirations to enhance teaching and the student experience.
