Salary: £34,804 to £40,322 per annum with USS benefits

Contract: 35 hours/ week, Full Time, This is a fixed term position for 3 years duration
Location: This position will be based at the Singleton Campus, Grove Building, Swansea.

The role provides an exciting opportunity to join Swansea University Medical School, one of the UK’s leading Medical Schools.

Swansea University Medical School provides an interdisciplinary approach, educating and training the next generation of doctors, life scientists, and health professionals. It collaborates with the NHS, business and the third sector in a spirit of open innovation and has established itself as a world-class place to learn, research and innovate.  The Medical School ranks 1st in the UK for research environment and 2nd for overall research quality (REF2014-2021) and 3rd for Medicine (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021).

The Medical School became the first department within the University to achieve an Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) Athena SWAN Charter Silver Award in 2015, and was re-awarded in 2019 in recognition of its commitment to equality. The University also holds the Athena SWAN Charter Silver Award.

Swansea University has been awarded the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence and Student Outcome Framework (TEF) Gold award to recognise its excellent teaching standards.

Swansea University Medical School embed Welsh language and culture into the medical programme. Fluent Welsh speakers are able to complete parts of their course in Welsh and are encouraged to view their bilingualism as an additional ability that can be used to provide a better quality of service to Welsh-speaking patients in clinical settings. Non-Welsh speakers receive support and guidance to build confidence, understanding and familiarity with Welsh language and culture as they train and work in Wales. This approach aims to increase awareness of the linguistic needs and barriers faced by health services world-wide, with recognition and respect for language as a healthcare need not novelty.

The Director of Welsh Language  Education Provision is expected to lead a small team with a high level of direction from the Head of the Graduate Entry Medicine programme, in the School of Medicine. The Director is responsible for applying the following independently in situations of limited complexity:

  • Director of Welsh Language education provision on the GEM programme.
  • Director of Rural and Remote Health in Medical Education (RRHIME), liaising with the Primary Care Academy
  • Promoting the wider public good in all actions, acting in a morally, legally and socially appropriate manner in dealings with stakeholders and members of the GEM team and the University.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and have a recognised teaching qualification that would lead to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or a commitment to achieve this.

The School has an under-representation of woman in the areas of research, so would particularly encourage applications from these backgrounds. Appointments will always be made on merit.

A satisfactory DBS certificate must be provided before a start date can be confirmed

Applicants are asked to provide a completed online application providing evidence against the essential criteria in the recruitment documentation.  Applicants should also attach to the application 2 separate documents:
