Organised administrators make the census

The census is a survey of the entire population of England and Wales that happens every 10 years. It's run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

The information we collect is used to make decisions that affect everyone - things like how many schools, surgeries and hospitals we need.

To help make sure everyone takes part in the census, we need an administrator for each of our area managers who are coordinating the operation.

The role

Are you helpful, organised and accurate in your work? In this important temporary role, you will support the census area manager, who is responsible for running the census in your area. You will work alongside the team leaders, led by the area manager, to make sure the census runs smoothly.

It's a varied role, combining desk-based and administrative tasks in the field. You will collate reports, arrange meetings, take notes and communicate with a variety of people including ONS employees and local authorities.

You will work independently and choose your hours, within guidelines set by the area manager.

About you

You are supportive, organised and self-motivated. You keep accurate, timely records and act with integrity. You are a confident communicator with good written and verbal skills in English (and ideally Welsh if you are working in Wales). You will have the confidence to work with a range of people, including management and the public, and excellent customer service skills are essential.

As this is a home-working role, you will need space you can use as an office where you can store boxes of field staff materials. In some locations, you will need a current, full UK driving licence and use of a motor vehicle, insured for business use. In others, this would be an advantage. We will pay travel expenses within your work area.

People make the census. If you are supportive, have plenty of initiative and are interested in making Census 2021 a success for everyone, apply for a census area support role.

We can only employ you if you are eligible to work for the Civil Service. Find out more about the Civil Service nationality rules.

COVID-19

Your health, and that of our field staff, is very important to us. We will be following the government's safety guidelines about the coronavirus (COVID-19). Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) will be provided to all staff. Social distancing will be maintained throughout the operation
