At the Animal and Plant Health Agency we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. As an administrative assistant for our International portfolio, you will support our important work to identify, manage and eradicate diseases including Avian Influenza, Newcastle Disease and Swine Influenza.

Virology at APHA is a vibrant, varied and exciting speciality, with good opportunities for personal development. Providing professional and secretarial support, you will help to ensure the smooth running of our Virology department. The Director of the international laboratories and the Virology head of Department will rely on you to deal with correspondence, coordinate logistics, arrange meetings/workshops, and manage diary and travel arrangements. You will also provide valuable assistance in monitoring the laboratory’s finances.

Good communication skills, both in person and in writing, will be central to your success. Your responsibilities will range from directing enquiries to appropriate staff and making sure they reply, through to drafting scientific reports, manuscripts, letters and emails using audio typing.

An experienced administrator, you have a proven ability to input sensitive data and collate paperwork accurately and securely. Comfortable working under pressure, you always meet your deadlines and work well in a small team. We expect you to be IT literate, particularly with the use of the Microsoft Office suite of programmes. The ability to work with senior managers and respond positively to change are vital.
