Job Spotlight: Civil Engineer

Published on: 11 Aug 2016

Being a civil engineer can be a fascinating job that could take you all over the world working on various projects.

There are different routes you can take when embarking on a career in this industry, such as a Modern Apprenticeship or a degree course in civil engineering.

You’ll find relevant courses at universities throughout the UK, including the University of Edinburgh.

But why should you become a civil engineer, what type of job is it, and what are the benefits?

For a start, civil engineers help shape the world around us, including infrastructure and transport systems across the globe.

It’s a very versatile job and has lots of subsidiary elements to it – from designing public buildings, roads, rail networks, public parks, or houses to actually being part of the process and building them.

Whatever your interest, there is a niche for all.

If you’re a creative person, who is passionate about design and infrastructure – be it buildings or roads – civil engineering is a great way of expressing your design ability and seeing your work come to fruition.

To find out more about this exciting career, we spoke to Stephen Jones, Project Director for Mott MacDonald.

He specifically designs roads and has enjoyed an extensive career that has spanned nearly four decades, taking him all over the world to places as diverse as Qatar, Nepal, Bangladesh and Scotland.

Stephen said: “You get immense satisfaction from the job. I’ve been lucky enough to work all over the world, including Africa. That was particularly special, especially when you’re creating a tarmac road where there was once just a dirt track.

“You’re giving local people an opportunity to get to market, or for children to go to school. And once you see the finished design, you can take pride in knowing you’re benefitting other peoples’ lives.”

For graduates interested in civil engineering, Stephen recommends applying for a trainee position within a civil engineering company.

Not only does this boost your career knowledge, but it means people are there to help guide you when you need support and to professionally review your work.
