5 Things to Remember While You're Job Hunting

Job searcg

Finding your ideal job isn’t exactly a walk in the park. In fact, it can sometimes feel more like a trek along a treacherous mountain with obstacles to trip you up (think rattle snakes and boulders). Don’t panic, you’re not alone! Think of Fish4jobs as a friendly park ranger, guiding you back on the path to your dream career. Job hunting can be an extremely stressful and disheartening time, so here are some things to remember along the way!

1. Don’t be too hard on yourself

So you were only invited to one interview but applied for ten roles? This is completely normal. In this hyper-competitive job climate, securing even one interview is seriously impressive. Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t getting as many replies to your applications as you hoped for. Also, remember to tailor your CV and cover letter to each application you make for a better chance of success!

2. Apply for many, many positions

As we said, securing an interview in the competitive world of employment today is an impressive feat. The more positions you apply for, the higher your chances of getting an interview. Don’t limit yourself to a few applications. Apply for any and every position that sparks your interest and get your CV out there!

3. Get online

With networking sites like Linkedin as well as job boards now giving you the chance to upload your CVs, it’s never been easier for potential employers to find you online. Make it easy for them! Keep your online CV and Linkedin profile up to date to give potential employers the most current impression of your skills and experience, thus making them more likely to get in touch for an interview.

4. Clean up your social media

As we said, it’s never been easier for a potential employer to find you online. This can be a blessing or a curse! Be careful about what you’re posting on social media. Writing on your CV that you’re an ‘enthusiastic and hard working person,’ but then writing on Twitter that you ‘can’t be bothered to go to work’ won’t exactly give the best impression! Remember, many employers WILL check the social media of potential employees, so always put your best self forward.

5. Be open to advice

When job hunting, it’s easy to get annoyed at unwanted advice. It seems that everyone you’ve ever met wants to chip in their two cents on what you’re doing wrong with your job search. Although this can be extremely frustrating to listen to, you have to remind yourself that sometimes advice can be helpful. Of course, some advice is more valuable than others. For example, feedback advice from a failed job interview is far more useful to improve your job search than a throw away comment from your Aunt May over Sunday lunch. Learn to sieve through the bad advice to find those gems of knowledge.
