5 Jobs in Hospitality That Didn't Exist 5 Years Ago

Published on: 17 May 2016

The times they are a-changin’ – and they’ve certainly changed a lot since Bob Dylan penned those famous lyrics back in the ’60s.

In fact, constant developments in technology and the pressure to keep up with all the latest fads means the world we live in today is quite different to what it was like just five years ago.

Here, we look at five jobs in hospitality that (probably) didn’t exist in 2011.

Hotel

Hotel Social Media Manager

Many businesses, including hotels, are making sure they’re capitalising on our obsession with all things social media by employing dedicated managers to keep their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat accounts bang up to date. Whether it’s tweeting the latest deals, responding to guests’ Facebook comments or making sure the best possible pics of the hotel are prominently displayed on Instagram, it’s the job of the hotel’s social media manager to make sure the company’s key messages are seen by as many people as possible.

Director of Vibe

Yes, there really is such a job. And, as you can probably guess from the title, it’s probably one of the coolest jobs ever. The position was created for Melissa Rosenfield by the Viceroy Hotel in Anguilla – and other establishments have since followed suit. Main responsibilities? Pretty much making sure the guests have an awesome time by acting as social director, party planner and camp counsellor. Where do we sign up?

iLounge Macologist

Once upon a time, if you wanted to work on a cruise ship, you’d probably find yourself applying for a job as a chef, casino croupier, waitress or entertainment staff. But if you’re passionate about all things Apple, then a whole new career could be waiting for you. Some cruise ships are now employing iLounge Macologists to maximise revenue on Apple products by providing solution-based selling. However, a technology or business degree is usually required so simply spending all day on your iPhone probably isn’t going to land you the job.

Proposal

Proposal Coach

It’s one of the biggest moments in a man (or woman’s) life when they get down on one knee and pop the question to their soul-mate. In the past, it was a story to tell future kids and grandchildren. These days, with so much of our lives shared online via images and video, it’s even more important to get it right. And if you’re planning to propose while on a dream holiday, that’s when a professional proposal coach could come in handy. At the Stowe Mountain Lodge in Vermont, the coach arranges a romantic setting for the big moment that can range from the resort’s spa to a hot air balloon.

Cruise

Cruise Ship Zumba Instructor

In the ’80s it was all about aerobics, in the ’90s step classes became popular. Now, gym bunnies are going crazy for the dance fitness programme Zumba. And many instructors are grabbing the opportunity to see the world and help people get in shape at the same time by offering their classes to passengers on a cruise ship. And here was us thinking holidays were just for lying by the pool…
