Schools Challenge Cymru Advisors

Schools Challenge Cyrmu is an exciting and innovative programme to improve educational outcomes for young people across Wales, delivered in partnership between schools, Regional Consortia, Government, Local Authorities and all those working to raise education standards across the country. Welsh Government is making a significant investment of around £20million to support this school improvement programme. This provides us with a great opportunity to build sustainable improvement in our schools and focus on helping to crack the associated cycle of disadvantage and educational underachievement.

Critical to the success of the Schools Challenge Cymru programme will be the appointment of high quality people who have a proven record in transforming education for children and young people. We need to appoint around 10 Schools Challenge Cymru Advisers to work with our regional consortia.

We require SCC Advisers to fulfill the advisory roles detailed below:

The SCC Advisers will work with secondary schools (and their cluster primaries) in the most challenging circumstances across Wales. They will make a major contribution to rapidly raising attainment, seeking long term and sometimes radical solutions. They will ensure that the schools build the capacity to sustain improvements to secure an effective contribution to the life chances and opportunities for pupils. Successful Advisers will be accountable to the Regional Consortia but will work closely with DfES as part of a national network.

We expect the SCC Advisers to provide resource of between 50 (guaranteed minimum commitment) -125 days per year. Please note that the exact timing and phasing in of resource will be reviewed and agreed with the Consortia and DfES on an ongoing basis.

We invite applications from high calibre individuals with demonstrable experience and track record of strategic engagement and delivery at a senior level over many years. Examples of past experiences could be, but not limited to, headship, HMI experience or equivalent.

To be eligible for the SCC Adviser positions, you will have a proven track record of expertise in working with secondary schools in the most challenging circumstances, to raise education standards in terms of improving attainment at relevant Key Stages, accelerating the progress of pupils facing the challenges of poverty, improving the quality of teaching and learning, developing leadership and building capacity so that improvement is sustainable.

The contract will be offered for a 2 year period with a possible extension for 1 year. We are working towards a May 2014 contract commencement date. However we will, if necessary, be able to accommodate the right contractor and review our start date in line with their personal circumstances. This could include candidates who may not be able to begin work until Sept 2014. Interests from applicants intending to contract under diverse employment status such as secondments and sole consultants are welcome. Applicants should state which consortium they would prefer to be considered for if they are successful.

Potential candidates should make themselves available for interviews on 7 and 8 May 2014.

Closing date: The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday the 25 April 2014 at midday.
