1. MAIN DUTIES

To promote quality within the branch of both incoming and outgoing material. To monitor,
record and feedback these aspects of quality to both internal and external stakeholders.

To promote a culture of continual improvement with regards to material quality both internally and externally.

To review and improve the material quality processes and systems.

To work safely and comply with the companies and / or contractors health and safety policies and requirements on site.

2. KEY FACTS AND FIGURES

Facts & Figures

Circa 19,000T per anum transfer facility for Co-Mingled material.
Circa 6,000T per anum transfer facility for News and Pam material

3. MAIN DUTIES

3.1. Health and Safety

-Maintain a clean, safe work environment in compliance with Company and OHSAS standards.
-Follow health and safety procedures in responsible areas in line with OHSAS standards
-Consistently work to company and site contractors safety standards
-Highlight unsafe practices / procedures or behaviour. Always challenge unsafe behaviour

3.2. Sampling

-Conduct accurate samples as per agreed schedule of incoming and outgoing material
-Weigh samples and record accurately on company data base system
-Be able to trend samples taken and run relevant reports highlighting these trends and patterns
-Feedback sampling results to internal stakeholders as required
-Advise and highlight sample results to Management so added value can be gained

3.3. Quality Monitoring

- Incoming material
Monitor material in line with company quality specifications. Pass, downgrade or reject as necessary, producing good written / visual documented evidence in the form of company Non Conformances.
Manage, monitor and feedback results of our clients ABCD grading system.
Monitor moisture of incoming loads using the branch moisture meter. Sample and
record excessive moisture as required evidencing with company NCR.
Feedback quality monitoring results to branch production and logistics operatives and Management both operationally and commercially. Feedback to consist via both verbal and written communication.
To actively participate in the establishment / continuous improvement of inspection and testing procedures to monitor the quality of materials

- Outgoing Material
Inspect outgoing material as necessary to ensure it meets with end customer
requirements.
Highlight any nonconforming material to Management before the load leaves the
branch.
Inform production operatives on site of quality issues and requirements so the right material is produced and sent to the right customer.
Sample and record moisture readings of outgoing material so any claims at the
customer can be verified or challenged. Samples and results to be held on database and accessed and fed back to our clients Management and sales team as required.
To actively participate in the establishment / continuous improvement of inspection and testing procedures to monitor the quality of materials

4. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
4.1. Skills

-Ability to be organised and approach work in a methodical manor
-Good oral and writing communication skills
-Good level of PC literacy.
-Ability to work using their own initiative, independently and as part of a team.
-Ability to analyse quality information and trend patterns / exceptions as required
-Take accurate measurements from weighing scales and accurately enter results onto a computer spreadsheet.
-Be able to work to a quality and sampling schedule independently
-Good English skills in speaking, reading and writing
-Be able to conduct some repetitive tasks and a degree of manual handling

4.2. Knowledge

- Knowledge of the recycling business.
- Grade knowledge and quality requirements of end customers a distinct advantage
- PC knowledge e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel etc
- Fork Lift Truck licence required at certain locations

Special features:
The post holder could be working in a busy and often pressurised environment
particularly working to deadlines. It may be necessary for the post holder to work
outside normal hours and sometimes work away from the Gateshead Branch. Notably
it may be required for the holder to visit customer sites, end user mills and reprocessing plants to examine and understand quality requirements.

The work will entail maintaining a high degree of confidentiality at all times.

Normal Hours of Work
45 hour working week, Monday - Friday, 08:00 - 17:30 (30 minute lunch break deducted)

Based at our Newcastle site you will join our busy Production Engineering team, supporting 24/7 printing operations helping to ensure regional and national publications are produced to tight deadlines.

You will have served a recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship gaining a minimum ONC qualification (HNC / HND preferred) and experience of working within a deadline driven engineering facility/high volume production environment. Experience in the Newspaper industry would be advantageous. An adaptable attitude to shift work is also important.

A comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems combined with excellent problem solving techniques is essential , use of PLC’s would be advantageous. In addition we require a flexible, customer-focused individual with a positive attitude towards health and safety. Experience in web offset printing press maintenance is desirable, but not essential for the right candidate.

In addition you need to be pc literate with the ability to achieve high levels of plant performance through planned, preventative and co-ordinated maintenance systems in line with current health and safety legislation and be able to undertake project and commissioning work. Ideally you will have an understanding of modern manufacturing methods such as 5s, Kaizen, & SMED.
