Key Responsibilities:

* Read and interpret engineering drawings
* Using a variety of measuring equipment together with the ability to work and hold fine tolerances

* To program, set and run CNC Universal Grinders.

Skills/ Experience:

* Knowledge of CNC Grinders, some basic programming skills and varied materials would be beneficial
* Apprentice trained precision grinder
* Manual Grinding experience would be an advantage
* Should be able to read and interpret engineering drawings.

We are looking for Assistant Programme Leaders who will work for two, four or six weeks during summer 2014 and live on the programme on a fully residential basis in London, Surrey, West Midlands or North West England.

The Assistant Programme Leader (APL) is jointly responsible with the Programme Leader for the pastoral care of all sixty young people on the programme and is in charge of behaviour management. The APL will report to the Programme Leader in the delivery of the Personal and Team Challenge weeks of NCS with The Challenge. The APL does not work on the Real Challenge part of the programme.

This role is suitable for a specialist in managing behaviour of young people with significant experience of residential youth work. This is a fulfilling and demanding position which involves supporting the pastoral care and development of sixty sixteen-year-olds.

About the Organisation

The Challenge Network is a fast-growing social enterprise that connects and inspires people across Britain to strengthen their communities. NCS with The Challenge is a programme that brings together young people from different backgrounds, builds their confidence, and challenges them to make a difference in their local community. In summer 2014, 16,500 young people across London, the West Midlands and the North West will take part in NCS with The Challenge for an intensive three-week summer programme followed by four weekends in the autumn.

NCS with The Challenge is part of the National Citizen Service (NCS), a life-changing experience for 16 and 17-year-olds. The scheme is available to people from all backgrounds. Young people get the chance to do outdoor activities, meet new people and give something back to their communities. By taking part they learn new skills and have a great experience they can put on their CVs or college applications. NCS promotes:

• a more cohesive society by mixing participants from different backgrounds;
• a more responsible society by supporting young people’s transition into adulthood;
• a more engaged society by enabling young people to work together to create social action projects in their local communities.

NCS with The Challenge Programme

We bring together sixteen-year-olds from across a community and challenge them to connect with people from different backgrounds, learn key skills for the workplace, and make a difference in their community. They achieve this by completing three challenges:
• The Personal Challenge (PC): Socially mixed teams of young people bond through a week of challenging outdoor activities.
• The Team Challenge (TC): Teams return home and use their skills to experience serving the local community.
• The Real Challenge (RC): Teams work to design and organise activities that will bring the local community together. The Real Challenge Design (RCD) takes part during the last part of the summer programme and the Real Challenge Action (RCA) takes place over four weekends in September.

All young people who complete NCS with The Challenge graduate from our programme and are signposted into year-round volunteering, membership and social action opportunities through The Challenge Society.

About the Opportunity

A single programme for an Assistant Programme Leader lasts two weeks and includes outdoor activities and residential experiences.

The Assistant Programme Leader will:
• Work intensively with individual challenging young people as required throughout the Personal and Team Challenge
• Provide floating support to the five teams of young people as required by the Programme Leader
• Support each of the mentors in working with their teams and to give them some time off
• Support the Programme Leader in management of the discipline system where required
• Live residentially during the Personal Challenge and Team Challenge
All meals and accommodation are provided for in this role. The accommodation during the Personal Challenge is generally in an outdoor activity centre and during Team Challenge is generally at a university campus; however, in some areas and during some parts of the programme, accommodation is at a campsite.
Training

All Assistant Programme Leaders receive three days of non-residential training (Friday to Sunday) in May or June to deliver NCS with The Challenge.

Work dates

The Assistant Programme Leader will work for one, two or three full two-week roles (i.e. ten, twenty or thirty days of work) plus work on up to two additional days for each wave worked: the final day of Real Challenge Action (27th or 28th September) and graduation (11th or 12th October).

A one-wave APL works twelve days, a two-wave APL works 24 days and a three-wave APL works 34 days.

Waves one to eight involves no weekend working during the summer period. The role is Mon-Fri (for PC and TC) and Mon-Thu (for RCD). Wave nine involves working over two consecutive weekends, including all three days of the bank holiday weekend. All RCA and graduation days take place at weekends.

About You

Candidates must demonstrate the following skills and characteristics:

Essential:
• Extensive experience of working directly with groups of young people
• Experience of working with young people with behavioural difficulties
• Experience of working with young people in a residential environment
• Experience of working in a fast-paced and demanding environment
• Willingness to develop project management and decision making skills

Beneficial:
• Experience of working with sixteen-year-olds
• Experience of managing or motivating groups of people in stressful environments (in a paid or voluntary capacity)
• Experience managing projects or events (for example youth programmes or complex events)
• Experience working with young people with a support requirement

Requirement

All staff who work on the NCS with The Challenge programme must have prior to starting work a returned satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) dated since 30 April 2013 and two satisfactory references regarding their suitability to work with young people. The Challenge will assist the application for, and pay for the processing of, a new DBS for staff members where required.

Further details

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved with an exciting programme which has tangible results for the young people involved. The role is demanding and fast-paced but highly rewarding. The compensation for this role is £1,140 for each 12-day wave on which you work. This payment includes pay in lieu of annual leave and is subject to tax and National Insurance deductions. Staff will be paid through The Challenge Network payroll on a monthly basis after completion of the programme. Staff can only claim for travel expenses incurred during the delivery of the programme, and not to and from either the residential or community part of the programme.
