You’ll need to be mobile with access to a car to facilitate cover across services and will be required to provide leadership and supervision to a dedicated staff team comprising of 8-10 FTE in each area.

The Person

An ideal candidate would understand each stage in the process of loading a web page or receiving an email. The 1st Line Support Engineer / Technician must have knowledge of the following web technologies and protocols:

* Basic runtime Apache configuration (.htaccess files)
* MySQL
* FTP
* SSH
* SMTP
* IMAP / POP3
* DNS

The 1st Line Support Engineer / Technician will have experience with UNIX-based operating systems and general system administration, including an ability to analyse resource contention on a UNIX server (e.g. knowledge of what “swap” is).

Candidates must also have a good knowledge of networking - an ability to recognise different network conditions, e.g. low throughput, high latency, packet loss, routing failures and also basic network topologies, e.g. subnets. The 1st Line Support Engineer / Technician will be comfortable working on and provisioning, production servers. They must be comfortable using KVM or IPMI to administer and configure servers and have experience with system administration.
