Bridport Museum is a registered charity at the heart of the culturally rich and vibrant town on the Jurassic Coast. The Trust is seeking new Trustees to join their Board at an exciting time in its development. The Museum underwent a major HLF-funded redevelopment in 2017, and has won critical acclaim and seen visitor numbers soar. The Board is now looking to recruit a variety of people with a range of skills to support the organisation to grow and develop further. If you are passionate about our work, about museums and heritage in general, if you are looking for a new role within the voluntary sector, we'd love to hear from you. In particular the Trust is looking to recruit the following Trustees:

  • General Trustees, with the potential to become Vice Chair or Chair
  • Trustee with commercial focus
  • Treasurer
  • Company Secretary

The Trust is also seeking Trustees who will take a lead to support staff in areas such as Safeguarding, GDPR and Health and Safety.

Time commitment: approximately 4 evening meetings per year, plus around 2 hours per month supporting staff or the Executive Committee. Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Main Trustee Duties and Responsibilities The role of a Trustee is to ensure that Bridport Museum Trust fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries through delivering on our vision, mission and values. The primary responsibility of trustees is to provide the organisation with strategic leadership and maintain a governance perspective to ensure it is well managed, resourced and administered, and those resources are used appropriately.

Statutory Responsibilities

  • To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
  • To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
  • To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity's funds
  • To participate in the appointment of the Director
  • Acting as guardians of the charity's assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
  • Ensuring that the charity's governance is of the highest possible standard.
  • To ensure the Board operates effectively Trustees should:
  • Contribute to the establishment of the organisation's strategic direction and goals and the monitoring of any strategic plans.
  • Evaluate the organisation's performance on a regular basis and holds the Director accountable for outcomes
  • Ensure the financial stability of the organisation and understands and acts upon financial and other monitoring information presented to it, questioning such information when appropriate
  • Define the boundaries of management authority
  • Delegate the implementation of its decisions to the Director and Executive Team, supporting them as required to carry out their work
  • Ensure the performance and development of the Director is reviewed annually
  • Review its performance annually and that all Trustees actively participate in this evaluation
  • Ensure that the Board's agreed position is represented when speaking publicly on behalf of the organisation attend at least 75% of board meetings annually.

As well as the various statutory duties, any trustee should make full use of any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the board make good decisions. The above list of duties is indicative only and not exhaustive. The Trustee will be expected to perform all such additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the role.

Time Commitment : half a day a month at a minimum, to attend board meetings and sub committees as required.

Remuneration: This post is un-remunerated however reasonable travel and subsistence expenses may be payable.

Person Specification
Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with the Trust's mission, experience, skills, and expertise in the commercial sector and combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and ambitions are particularly sought.

  • A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision making
  • A history of impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • Commitment to the organisation and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
  • Good, independent judgement and strategic vision
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees and Director
  • A track record of commitment to promoting equality and diversity
