PURPOSE OF ROLES
Technician - To provide technical assistance to the Coatings business by undertaking product development and service work under supervision
Junior Chemist - To undertake practical laboratory work in the Industrial Coatings Department, as well as provide technical assistance to production and customers, by carrying out product development and service work under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager and Development Chemists.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To undertake practical laboratory work, including; Paint formulation, small scale paint manufacture, colour matching, and preparation of Technical Data Sheets, raw material evaluations, paint application, physical testing of paints, chemical resistance testing of paints, preparation of external weathering samples, record keeping, including lab books, samples & panels for accelerated weathering.
- Assist with analytical work, including; Paint solids determination, flashpoint determination, digital imaging, rheology measurement & interpretation, operation of LTD/Analytical Department's equipment.
- Assist with support work, including; Supervision of batches in production, investigation of production problems, finding re-work outlets for redundant paint.
- Assisting in pilot line trials and investigating customer complaints.
- Comply with Beckers Quality, Environmental, and Safety Management Systems
- To be competent and fully compliant in the safe operation of equipment, including; general lab equipment & ovens, calibration of laboratory equipment, operation of accelerated weathering cabinets, operation of pilot line (with the appropriate training).
- To adhere to the Becker’s code of conduct at all times
KEY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURS REQUIRED
- Knowledge of basic principles of paint preparation, application and teting.
- To be fully competent in the use of IT systems and software including; Lotus Notes, Achiever databases, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint IFS, “Safeware”
- Capable of working to strict deadlines whilst adhering to quality requirements.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
RELEVANT TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics or equivalent.
- GCSE C or above (or equivalent) in science based subject, preferably chemistry.
