Job Title: Design Engineering Manager

Reporting to: Managing Director

MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

  • Plan and direct activities of the company Design and Technical Support Engineers, typically in the areas of:

Funded tasking - external (customer) Post Design Support
Funded tasking - external (customer) Research & Development
Internally funded - Internal (Exelis) Research and Development
Production technical support
Product non-conformity investigations
Government Furnished Equipment Management
Prototype modelling

  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to subordinates
  • Develop and conduct work programs in accordance with company policies, priorities and budget constraints
  • Manage department resources to ensure functional performance is consistently achieved in line with customer and business requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight and assistance to other departments as required.
  • Provide timely and effective reporting to meet expectations.
  • Provide direction and scoping input to funded design bids and identified R&D opportunities.
  • Manage contractual and program performance on all customer funded Design Engineering activities from Concept development to post design support.
  • Represent the business on Release Systems Antenna Products (RSAP) Design Engineering cross site activities and initiatives.

TO WHOM RESPONSIBLE: Managing Director

EDUCATION:

  • 8+ years of technical program related experience in government contracting environment
  • ONC/HNC or Degree qualified in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering/Science discipline.

EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

To be successful in this role you will have a sound knowledge of, and a proven success track record of managing Government/Prime Contractor funded Design Engineering based programs and at least 3 years' experience in managing engineering qualified personnel on a day to day basis.

  • Defence Contractor or Government Agency background.
  • Government tendering and contractual reporting.
  • Budget planning and management.
  • Used to working with diverse range of tasks with changing priorities.
  • Working to tight deadlines with unsociable hours on occasions.
  • Able to deal effectively with foreign military and civilian officials, as well as prime contractors and commercial team mates.
  • Specification writing and implementation
  • Configuration management
  • KPI performance reporting

Desirable:

  • Associated Security or Civil Aerospace industry engagement.
  • Management of Post Design Support Contracts
  • Previous employment with a USA Corporate parent company.
  • Corporate cross company working.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Military Aircraft/Weapon Interface Equipment functionality and criticality
  • UK Design standards
  • Airworthiness practices

Desirable:

  • Patent application processes
  • UK MoD Contracting practices

RESPONSIBILITY - SUPERVISORY:

  • Heads up a central functional department
  • Accomplishes results through lower lever subordinates, mainly experienced specialist engineers who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments.
  • Actively manages staff performance, attendance and training/development needs.

RESPONSIBILITY - ASSETS:

Department:

  • Hardware demonstration equipment and test assets
  • Design laboratory facility and test equipment
  • Prototype machine shop and rapid prototype modelling machine
  • Office CAD systems

Personal

  • Laptop computer and other office/communications equipment issued in support of the role.

RESPONSIBILITY - CONTACTS:

  • Work directly with Managing Director, with extensive engagement with the site Business Development, Finance, Contracts and Operational functional leads.
  • Coordination with RSAP Design Engineering Lead.
  • Coordination with other Brighton business functions such as IT, Quality, EHS and HR.
  • Business Contacts - Government officials, prime contractors and suppliers.

SPECIFIC TASKS:

  • Effectively and comprehensively manage the Design Engineering function of the business - attaining performance through the management of professional staff and subject matter experts.
  • Influence Business strategic direction from the design engineering aspect.
  • Identify new business opportunities and aid capture plans.
  • Identify and develop the customer's requirements to match the business capabilities.
  • Identify and propose business capability development to match customer/market future needs and entry points for exploitation.
  • Review, report and maintain Design based program performance against contractual requirements.
  • Manage departmental compliance with company policy, customer requirements and relevant legal regulations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Supervision is minimal, with general assignments and performance accountability being generally task and objective orientated.

The direct line manager (Managing Director) will provide:

  • Guidance on Budget and Corporate requirements.
  • Corporate Business strategic direction.
  • Direction on priorities for pursuits.
  • Regular feedback and assessment of performance.
  • Support where required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Must be a UK citizen (not dual national) and willing to travel overseas.
  • Overseas travel time away from principal work site considered minimal 2-5%.
