Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

Journal publishing is going through an unprecedented period of change, with market, economic and technological developments significantly affecting the way new information is presented and delivered. Oxford University Press (OUP) is seeking to recruit an experienced and talented senior journals publisher to oversee manage the development and growth of titles as part of our fast-growing physical sciences and life sciences journals portfolios.

As a department of the University of Oxford, OUP provides a secure and prosperous environment where talent and journals can flourish. We are a not-for-profit publisher with an extensive and highly successful journal publishing program, offering a unique perspective that balances sustainability with a mission-based culture. OUP is a true partner with editors and with societies, helping to expand their global influence by increasing their journals' reach and by publishing the highest quality content. This role is part of the OUP Global Academic Business; publishing books, journals and digital resources for the research, professional and higher education markets.

About the role

As a Senior Journals Publisher you will oversee the management of the life sciences and physical sciences journals published from the Oxford office and manage and develop your own portfolio of journals. Externally, you will be working with a varied group of international collaborators and specialists, whilst internally you will engage with a group of talented, friendly and dedicated colleagues across the whole organisation. You will report to the Global Editorial Director for Science and Medical Journals.

The provision of excellent service and the long-term management of key relationships is a major component of this role. You will be responsible for strategic development of the list and for driving new business development. As part of the acquisitions component of the role you will be expected to monitor a target list of journals, respond to RFP's, and lead bids for society journal contracts.

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Extensive experience of journal publishing and managing third party relationships in a publisher or journals publishing manager role
  • Have experience of bidding for journal contracts
  • Be an excellent communicator and organizer and have the ability to manage multiple relationships with diverse clients
  • Have experience of people management
  • Be creative and highly motivated with a drive to succeed
  • Be a self-starter and a team player
  • Be confident meeting deadlines, working under pressure, and making decisions
  • Be educated to degree level or equivalent ideally in a scientific, or related, discipline
