Job Title: Shift Plant Attendant, Fuel Handling Plant, New build biomass fuelled power station.

Salary/Rate: £26,000/annum. Overtime

Working time/pattern: Shift working pattern: 4 days on 4 days off, 12 hour shifts

Location: Tansterne, East Riding of Yorkshire, near Kingston upon Hull.

Primary function:

Shift Plant Attendant (Fuel Handling Plant) will work at a newly constructed, state of the art, power generation facility fuelled by biomass. The facility consists of the following systems:

  • A biomass storage and fuel handling facility,
  • Two high pressure water tube boilers, 40 tonne/hr steam raising capacity each,
  • A single 23 mega-watt high efficiency steam turbine generator
  • Associated balance of plant: Pumps, valves, water treatment plant etc
  • Flue gas cleaning and ash handling.

The Shift Plant Attendant (Fuel Handling Plant) will report into the Shift Plant Engineer and will be responsible for controlling and monitoring the delivery of fuel (some 30 truck deliveries per day), taking fuel samples, tending to the fuel handling equipment and responding to any blockages or breakdowns.

Key roles and responsibilities:

Typical duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Operating and monitoring the facility from the central control room SCADA system.
  • Starting and stopping the boilers, turbine and associated systems.
  • Performing the daily, weekly, monthly inspections and diligently recording findings.
  • Carrying out routine maintenance on the Power System (boilers, steam turbine and associated equipment).
  • Keeping an accurate shift log of all operational occurrences during the shift.
  • Interfacing with the local power grid company to manage the power export.
  • Training and supervision of plant attendants in how to operate/control of the facility.
  • Managing plant upset conditions, including fuel feed blockages and excursions in operating parameters.
  • Reporting issues with the SCADA system to fault find/de-snag the SCADA system.

Candidate experience - essential criteria

The following criteria must be met in full:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience operating and controlling power generation or industrial steam boiler facilities.
  • Proven mechanical skills, with the ability to work on the strip down and re-assembly of valves, pumps, pipework, hydraulics and other such equipment.
  • Previous experience in a maintenance or mechanical fitter type role.
  • A technical understanding of the steam cycle power generation process ‘From silo to stack'.
  • An ability to evaluate performance data, fault find, diagnose issues and investigate solutions.
  • Hands on practical ability to assist other technicians with maintenance activities as required.
  • Diligent record keeping and reporting skills.
  • A strong awareness of Health and Safety requirements, proven ability to understand risk assessments and follow method statements when carrying out any works on site.
  • The ability to read and understand Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's)

Candidate experience - desirable criteria

The following criteria are desirable but not essential:

  • The ability and appropriate qualification (CITB, IPAF or equivalent) to operate mobile machinery including: Forklift, MEWP's and Telehandlers.
  • Other mechanical skills, including Welding, pipe fitting, rigging, slinging
  • Prior experience of solids/fuel handling equipment, including: Conveyors, grab cranes, screens and screw feeders.
  • Ability to be on site within 30 minutes.
  • The ability to work flexibly to accommodate the needs of the facility.
