Job Title:

Mechanical Technician, New build biomass fuelled power station.

Salary/Rate: £33,000/annum.

Working time/pattern: Shift working pattern: 4 days on 4 days off, 12 hour shifts

Location: Tansterne Advanced Biomass Power Plant, East Riding of Yorkshire, near Kingston upon Hull.

Primary function:

The Mechanical Technician will work at a newly constructed, state of the art, power generation facility fuelled by biomass. The facility consists of the following systems:

  • A biomass storage and fuel handling facility,
  • Two high pressure water tube boilers, 40 tonne/hr steam raising capacity each,
  • A single 23 mega-watt high efficiency steam turbine generator
  • Associated balance of plant: Pumps, valves, water treatment plant etc
  • Flue gas cleaning and ash handling.

The Mechanical Technician will report into the Lead Shift Engineer and will be responsible for carrying out day to day planned maintenance activities and responding to unplanned equipment breakdowns.

Key roles and responsibilities

Typical duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Performing the daily, weekly, monthly inspections on equipment including pumps, fans, valves, motors and diligently recording findings.
  • Maintaining the fuel handling equipment: Conveyor systems, grab crane, vibrating screens
  • Responding to equipment breakdowns or blockages in the fuel handling system.
  • De-coupling and removing items of equipment (sometimes large/heavy) for repair/overhaul.
  • Operating mobile machinery, including forklifts, telehandlers and MEWPS.
  • Cutting, welding and fabrication of steelwork to aid in maintenance of the facility.
  • Looking after the on-site workshop facilities, ensuring that consumable levels are maintained and hand tools are in good working order and returned after use.
  • Working with the Plant Attendants to gain knowledge of the power generation process  
  • Working under a ‘Permit to work' system, carrying out maintenance on equipment whilst the facility is in operation.

Candidate experience - essential criteria

Candidates must meet the following essential criteria in full:

  • Strong mechanical skills, with the ability to work on the strip down and re-assembly of valves, pumps, pipework, hydraulics, fans and other such equipment.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a mechanical or maintenance role (Automotive mechanic included).
  • Proven ability to safely use small lifting equipment including chain blocks, pull lifts, jacks etc
  • The ability and appropriate qualification (CITB, IPAF or equivalent) to operate mobile machinery including: Forklift, MEWP's and Telehandlers.
  • Proven ability to weld (Arc/MIG), metal cutting (Oxy-acetylene, abrasive disc), and fabrication with steel.
  • The ability to understand Risk Assessments, follow Method Statements and follow Permit to Work procedures to ensure that all work activities are carried out without risk to personnel or equipment safety.
  • An ability to fault find, diagnose issues and investigate solutions.
  • The ability to work flexibly to accommodate the needs of the facility.

Candidate experience - desirable criteria

The following criteria are desirable but not essential:

  • Confined spaces trained.
  • Prior experience of working in the power generation or oil and gas industries.
  • Prior experience of working with pressure pipework (steam, air or gas).
  • Prior experience with solids handling equipment, including conveyor systems, vibrating screens, push floors and grab cranes.
  • Prior experience with hydraulic equipment.
  • Ability to attend site within 30 minutes.
