Job Title:

Fuel Coordinator, New build biomass fuelled power station.

Salary/Rate: £38,000/annum.

Working time/pattern: 5 day working week (Mon - Fri), 8 hrs/day.

Location: Tansterne Advanced Biomass Power Plant, East Riding of Yorkshire, near Kingston upon Hull.

Primary function:

The Fuel Coordinator will work at a newly constructed, state of the art, power generation facility fuelled by biomass. The facility consists of the following systems:

  • A biomass storage and fuel handling facility,
  • Two high pressure water tube boilers, 40 tonne/hr steam raising capacity each,
  • A single 23 mega-watt high efficiency steam turbine generator
  • Associated balance of plant: Pumps, valves, water treatment plant etc
  • Flue gas cleaning and ash handling.

The Fuel Coordinator will report directly into the Facility General Manager and will be responsible for managing the day to day scheduling, delivery, offloading and sampling of chipped grade 3 biomass to the Facility. You will also take responsibility for organising the collection and transport of ash from the facility. At full load, the facility will consume some 480 tonnes of biomass per day.

Key roles and responsibilities

Typical duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Directly managing 2 Fuel Plant Attendants and the automatic weigh bridge facility. Indirect responsibility for the Fuel Plant Attendant team.
  • Coordination of fuel delivery with the fuel suppliers.
  • Forecasting and scheduling deliveries to ensure sufficient quantity of fuel is on stock to sustain the facility operation during weekends, public holidays.
  • Setting up and managing a fuel sampling and on-site testing regime to record the quality parameters of each delivery which are traceable back to the specific delivery/weigh bridge ticket.
  • Providing a daily report to the General Manager on level of fuel stock and quality of fuel delivered, issues with out of specification fuel.
  • Coordination with Chief Maintenance Manager to forecast fuel requirements during periods of planned or unplanned maintenance/outage.
  • Taking weekly fuel samples and arranging off-site laboratory analysis.
  • Setting up and managing a fuel sampling and testing regime to comply with the requirements of both the Environment Agency and Ofgem for ROC issuance.
  • Managing the sampling, recording, collection and disposal of fly-ash from the facility.
  • Managing the collection of bottom ash, inerts and oversize fuel from the facility.
  • Managing the stock and delivery of auxiliary fuel oil for the facility.
  • Working with the Facility HSE Manager to develop site traffic management and fuel offloading policy.

Candidate experience - essential criteria

Candidates must meet the following essential criteria in full:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience at operations level within a bulk solids processing industry: Biomass to energy, Paper, Food, Brewing, Gypsum, Mining/Minerals etc.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven personnel management experience.
  • Diligent record keeping and reporting skills.
  • Previous experience of solids sampling, analysis and data recording traceable back to the batch manufacture/delivery.
  • The ability to work flexibly to accommodate the needs of the facility.

Candidate experience - desirable criteria

The following criteria are desirable but not essential:

  • Prior experience of solids/fuel handling equipment, including: Conveyors, grab cranes, screens and screw feeders.
  • Prior experience of weigh bridge operation.
  • A Health and Safety qualification, NEEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Prior experience of building and managing a team of operations/maintenance technicians.
