The role:

The Microscopy Technical Specialist will work in a small team who operate as a centre of excellence within Bioscience, this group support a wide community providing solutions to a diverse range of questions. It will be an opportunity for you to demonstrate your technical knowledge and be supported to develop your experience with external networks.

  • Provide scientific leadership within Microscopy; proposing, leading and critically reviewing work programmes in line with the project need and business strategy
  • Provide professional scientific advice and make technical recommendations on processes, technologies and techniques which will have significant business impact
  • Develop and implement innovative scientific solutions to project questions, interpret data in context and make recommendations to drive projects
  • Proactively engage with Development and Market communities to highlight where Microscopy and associated techniques can be deployed in product support and sales.
  • Develop strategic external collaborations to support the science strategy, utilise strong external network to leverage wider insight and capabilities
  • Manage the Microscopy team, leading the strategic direction of the team, develop and gain senior management ownership of the science strategy
  • Provide challenge and prioritisation to new work requests, ensure objectives and timescales are clear, deploying appropriate resources and skillsets to the deliver required outputs
  • Plan and manage own activities and those of the team over many months, considering the implications of actions now and in the longer term
  • Ensure the team are motivated, trained and have clear plans for personal development
  • Initiate and implement new ideas or changes to established protocols or ways of working, fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the team
  • Responsible for technology foresight and development of capital investment plans within the team
  • Contribute to the development of local HS&E policy and strategy; identify, recommend and implement significant improvements in own area

Qualifications

Skills & experience:

  • A chemical or material science background would be preferable although a biological or life science background would also be suitable
  • Substantial practical experience in a relevant professional or academic environment
  • A track record of applying microscopy techniques to new and diverse challenges
  • Strong background in light and electron microscopy and associated preparation techniques
  • Competence in using image manipulation software such as Photoshop and ImageJ for would be an advantage
  • Experience with X-ray microanalysis, confocal microscopy and cryo electron microscopy would be highly desirable
