Job Purpose
The Discipline Engineer will take on an integral role within the Deep Tube Upgrade Programme (DTUP) that will deliver a comprehensive modernisation of four LU deep tube lines. They will work on the technical development and delivery of the operational control systems elements of the Railway Control System project. This control system will provide centralised control and monitoring of station and track based equipment such as: CCTV, customer information, train systems and traction power control and others.

These systems will be delivered into a new operational control centre to provide a highly integrated control & communication solution in four new control rooms. The candidate will need extensive experience in the design and implementation of control systems for the rail industry or other industries where an operational strategy is highly dependent on industrial control systems (e.g. Chemical Plants, Emergency Services).

Key Accountabilities
  • Deliver operational control system work packages, managing own time and work load to achieve this.
  • Evaluate, select and apply appropriate solutions to operational control systems related issues.
  • Provide technical support to the engineering team leader, when preparing technical specifications, reports, safety plans, architecture definitions, interfaces with legacy systems and evaluating operational requirements.
  • Develop system requirements in conjunction with other DTUP engineering teams to design and develop key system interfaces.
  • Taking the technical lead on scope and quality for assigned work packages, working with project management, project engineering and contracted design teams.
  • Support project management teams in the development of programme schedules, cost estimates and risk forecasts.
  • Maintain and develop close links with the systems integration team, safety team, operations team and other discipline engineers to ensure effective delivery of engineering or technical services.
  • Maintain an understanding of, and manage as necessary, interfaces for the assigned work packages.
  • Maintain an awareness of emerging technologies and their potential application to the railway.

  • Ability to build effective working relationships, with people at all levels across the organisation and externally and to influence.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to large size teams in time sensitive and complex projects.
Knowledge

  • Relevant structured training to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Must have extensive knowledge in the design, installation, testing and handover of control and communication systems on an industrial scale.
  • Chartered Engineer Status or qualifications leading to Chartered Status is required together with membership of an appropriate professional institution
Experience
  • Considerable experience in a technical role developing (throughout all stages of the design cycle) industrial control systems encompassing:
    Development of, or response to, project scopes or tenders; procurement process; system design; project delivery; FAT and SAT; installation works; assurance processes and an awareness of engineering safety management, electronic security and RAM.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills are required, and an ability to extract and manage user and sponsor project requirements.
Experience of multiple other systems / disciplines ideally including:
Control room design, SCADA systems, communication systems, CCTV systems, network design, traffic management systems, HV power control, HMI Design, signalling systems, Human Factors.
