The role: we are looking for a Senior / Principal Materials Engineer to be based in Swindon (Bristol or London also considered) to help further our resource and expertise within our Asset Management & Materials group. The main purpose of this position is to provide concrete technology and cathodic protection expertise on a variety of projects across power, environment, water, rail, highways, tunnels, marine, ports & coastal. Project work will include specification and materials selection for new and existing structures; to improve durability and corrosion resistance and extended design life requirements for cost effective and sustainable prolongation of asset life. Key Responsibilities: • Providing technical consultancy in concrete technology to projects where CH2M are designing new infrastructure. • Wide variety of new and existing asset types using various modeling tools. • Managing and leading investigation and repair projects to concrete and other forms of infrastructure. • Managing projects with value from GBP10k - GBP500k. • Managing projects to targeted budget/profit, and on-time delivery. • Ensuring technical quality and correctness throughout. • Mentoring junior materials technologists. • Interacting confidently with internal/external Clients, managing Client relationships, securing follow-on work. • The role requires reasonably frequent site visits, and there is potential for overseas visits. This is a great opportunity to widen and deepen your materials technology expertise and experience, working on a very wide range of infrastructure types, in UK and overseas, both in new design support studies using in-house models for durability strategies and early-age concrete behaviour, and also on existing structures involving site condition surveys and developing remedial schemes. Our materials technologists are currently supporting some of the biggest infrastructure development projects underway: Tideway, HS2, Crossrail, Hinckley, A14, Smart-motorways, TEAM2100, Dubai Metro extension, and more. These staff are currently supporting projects across the UK, and also in UAE, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and South America. We have a strong core of materials technologists across concrete, highway pavements, metals and other structural materials, which is centralised to maintain the strength of the centre of excellence and offer variety to these staff. This team also has close links to our asset management consulting staff. The minimum qualifications for this position are: • Background in Civil Engineering or Geo-materials with BSc, BEng or MSc, MEng necessary; or corrosion science background with concrete corrosion experience. • Demonstrable good quality technical report writing, with a high standard of focus and reasoning and accurate use of English language. • Detailed knowledge of concrete technology for new construction and concrete repair, including relevant materials and applicable standards. The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience: • Understanding of reinforced concrete deterioration processes and mitigation measures. • Experience in deterioration modeling of reinforced concrete and durability design / durability planning for infrastructure projects. • Experience in planning and implementation condition surveys and structural assessments, e.g. bridge assessments, industrial facilities. • Experience in design, specification and supervision of repair and upgrading structures.
