The role of a Marine Surveyor with the MCA is extremely varied and no two days are the same. You will be required to survey, inspect and audit a variety of different vessels, large and small, international and domestic, to ensure UK and International Regulations are being met.
Role responsibilities
You will be line managed by a Principal Marine Surveyor. In respect of operational delivery you will be responsible to the Technical Manager and Business Manager for assisting the Marine Office and Divisional Area in achieving its agreed annual Business Plan activities and objectives.
As part of your day to day role you will be required to inspect, audit and survey ships and maritime ship operators to safeguard that they meet UK, EU and international safety, management, welfare, security and anti-pollution regulations. You will also carry out approval of stability information where qualified to do so.
Surveyors will operate to a flexible working pattern consisting of a 7.4 hour working day and over the course of a year the post-holder is contracted to work 1931 net conditioned hours.

The Directorate of Maritime Safety and Standards (DMSS) inspects and surveys ships to ensure that they are meeting both UK and international safety, security and anti-pollution standards. We work closely with the Directorate of the United Kingdom Shipping Register (DUKSR) to prove certification to ships and seafarers, the registering of vessels on the UK flag and responding to pollution from shipping and offshore installations.

About you
You will be an experienced maritime professional with relevant academic qualifications. You will possess proven customer service skills and have experience of managerial roles on board ship or in a technical capacity of responsibility within the maritime industry.
The minimum academic qualification required is:
• Honours Degree in Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical and Marine Engineering or Marine Technology
Applicants without the above qualifications, may also be eligible if they are Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) (through Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)), but in such cases evidence of the equivalent level of learning plus marine industry experience will need to have been demonstrated to the satisfaction of an MCA S&I technical review panel.
Other qualifications may be accepted, subject to evidence being submitted that demonstrates an acceptable academic content covering a similar level of technical knowledge related to commercial shipping. Such qualifications will be reviewed and assessed by the MCA S&I technical review panel.
In each of the above cases the stated qualifications need to be supported by 'sufficient experience' in a managerial role on board a ship or in a technical capacity of responsibility within the maritime industry.
Due to the nature of the role, successful candidates must already hold or be willing to undergo a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC). Gaining CTC Clearance will normally require you to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years, and only candidates who meet this requirement will be considered for the role.
