Student Support Worker - Learning Difficulties and Disabilities

Randstad Student Support is recruiting for Support Workers to work with students with a wide range of needs, including academic, social, emotional and physical. Starting in September at a local college in the Newcastle area for the new academic year 2017 / 2018.

This is a real opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.

You will be supporting students who may have Special Educational Needs which could include Autism, Asperger's or may have moderate or severe learning difficulties. You will be helping the students to achieve their potential by providing learning support both in and out of class.

This role would suit someone who is looking for flexibility and term time hours. You will be employed based on student needs and your individual availability.

Due to the nature of the position a Full Enhanced DBS will be undertaken.

Responsibilities

* To work under the direction of the teacher during sessions
* To develop learners' independence
* To develop learners' English and Maths skills
* Ability to keep students on task and engaged
* Ensuring the personal safety and well being of students and self at all times
* Provide support to students during breaks and lunch time
* Escorting students to and from taxis and during activities in the community
* Adhere to and implement student behaviour plans/ behaviour strategies
* Ability to monitor students' progress and set new targets
* Adhere to and implement student behaviour plans/ behaviour strategies
* Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, carers and students
* Students require a lot of social/emotional/pastoral support particularly within their friendship groups
* To deliver a high standard of support for learners with ALS needs on a 1:1 or small group basis
* Successful applicants must be suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults
* A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) will be carried out

Desirable

* Experience of children/adults with ASD/Asperger Syndrome
* Experience of SLDD settings
* Experience in personal care
* An understanding of alternative methods of communication that could be used with non-verbal students - PECS and Makaton/BSL
