Job Description: CARETAKER

This Job Description gives an indication of tasks to be performed within a specific area.

Terms: Permanent, 25 hours per week, full-year Hours to be allocated on a rota basis (reviewed monthly) worked normally between 6.00 am and 9.30 pm Mon to Thurs, 6.30pm Friday. There may be occasions when the rota will include working beyond 9.30 pm (e.g. during College events) or on an occasional Saturday to cover Sports use and to include the Open Event Saturday. Additional hours may be required during College holidays and/or to cover staff holidays.

Salary: Based on a full-time equivalent salary of £15,242 to £16,532 pa (actual salary for 25 hours would be within the range £10,299 to £11,170 pa)

Job Purpose: To ensure the College structure, fabric and fittings are maintained and repaired, to provide a high-class working and studying environment. To ensure the campus is monitored in a professional manner, showing respect and politeness to all persons attending or visiting the College, whilst presenting a smart and re-assuring presence to everyone at all times. To ensure the campus is fully accessible at the start of the day and fully secure at the close of day.

Responsible to: The Estates and Facilities Manager

Key Tasks:

  • To assist in the delivery of a safe and secure teaching and working environment under the direction of the Estates and Facilities Manager
  • To be responsible for securing the College (i.e. unlocking or locking of the campus)
  • To monitor student conduct and take appropriate action when required, whilst on campus
  • Control of vehicle movement and parking
  • To undertake porterage duties for deliveries
  • To assist the Estates team in carrying out maintenance tasks
  • To assist the Estates team in the monitoring and checking of the heating, cooling, ventilation, hot and cold water services
  • To assist in the clearing of snow during inclement weather, and to maintain when required, clear routes around the College for students, visitors and staff
  • Regular litter picking as required
  • To direct visitors, contractors and others when requested
  • To assist with fire and other evacuation procedures of the campus in the event of an emergency
  • Setting out of classroom and exam furniture
  • To carry out student ID checks as appropriate
  • To carry out vehicle ID checks as appropriate
  • To assist cleaners and to carry out cleaning tasks (when requested to by Estates Manager or Deputy), and to monitor their start times
  • To carry out various check lists as regards to H&S regulations
  • To help the College to be environmentally friendly by conserving energy where appropriate
