Brief Description
Due to a significant increase of investment in drainage related projects in this control period, an opportunity is available to recruit a Design Engineer with drainage design experience to work in our earthworks & drainage team. The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of railway related drainage & civil engineering schemes from early design stages through to detailed design. These schemes will include site visits and inspections, assessments and design for schemes in the LNE Route and wider UK. The role offers the chance to work in a successful, emerging design office with excellent long term career opportunities, specifically in a drainage related role. You will be required to control and manage all aspects of engineering schemes from agreeing fees, procurement of suppliers, technical design and the relationship between the Design Group and all Client interfaces.
About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities
• Design of civil and drainage engineering structures using Eurocodes, Network Rail standards and Railway Group Standards
• Undertake assessment of Fluvial and Pluvial flood risk issues
• Undertaking structural inspections and assessments of a variety of structures including culverts, drainage system, overbridges, underbridges, retaining walls and retaining structures
• Undertake design development of drainage & civil engineering options for project renewals proposals so that full consideration is given to safety, maintainability, ease of construction, environmental and whole life issues
• Proactively participate as a member of the Integrated Design Group working alongside Engineering Technicians and other disciplines
• Undertake site visits to supervise subcontractors completing intrusive site investigations (masonry coring, trial pits, window samples, boreholes, CCTV drainage investigations etc) and non-intrusive surveys (topographical surveys, GPR surveys, environmental surveys etc)
• Undertake the design development of the selected single option to Approval in Principle status
• Undertake civil/drainage engineering design development to ensure that schemes are developed which are cost effective, fit for purpose, and that meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality
• Prepare full engineering designs including design calculations, engineering specifications, scheme drawings (completed by the Technicians within the team), design certificates (Form B/003) and risk assessments.
• Undertake the role of Designer under Construction Design Management (CDM 2015)
• Liaise with the appropriate Network Rail Project Engineers during design development so that the Health and Safety documents for site works and surveys are produced and accepted to the required standards
• Drive and ability to build on existing client relationship and develop suitable opportunities
• Undertake quality assurance and technical review
• Liaise with Statutory Authorises to obtain existing information and the necessary discharge permissions, requirements and connection approval
• Provide mentoring and training to Graduate and Assistant Engineers
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
• A Civil Engineering degree
• Experience of producing detailed design calculations for Drainage and Civil Engineering related infrastructure
• Experience of scoping drainage schemes and producing detailed solutions to industry standards
• Understanding of drainage catchment areas and design flows.
• Knowledge /appreciation of railway engineering
• Knowledge of drainage modelling packages such as Micro Drainage, Flood Modeller, etc
• Understanding of relevant UK water & drainage policy and familiar with current best practice & design standard within drainage/water discipline
• Relevant experience of working in a Civil Engineering design team
• An ability to work and communicate effectively in a busy team environment
• An appreciation of all of the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure
• Appreciation of the Construction Design Management (CDM 2015) regulations
• Experience of communicating with Clients on project related issues
• The ability to diversify in a busy team to ensure that challenging deadlines are always met
