Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Peterborough
Salary: GBP30,000-GBP35,000
We are looking for a mechanical design engineer, who, ideally has industry experience in special purpose machinery, industrial automation and handling systems design using the Solid Edge/ Solidworks 3D CAD platforms.You will part of a small, agile and friendly team of Design Engineers, defining cutting edge solutions and designs for next generation technology products, for an industry leading customer.
This role is the ideal opportunity to develop your design skills and experience as part of an integrated engineering team. You will be involved in the conceptual design, right through to the final commissioning of the machinery and automated solutions for our customer.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop new mechanical designs using 3D modelling
- Integrate with controls system designers and programmers to provide complete machine solutions
- Work closely with parts manufacturers in DfM process and ensure on-time delivery of parts
- Produce 2D manufacturing drawing packs to company standards
- Preparation of manufacturing BOMs and installation specifications
- Improve and update existing designs to achieve the use of common components, improve quality and reduce machine down-time.
- Guidance and support to maintenance and engineering functions
- Contribute to the development of engineering excellence within the business
- Provide the engineering department with mechanical engineering expertise in support of future business opportunities

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- BEng/BSc/HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or similar education
- Experience in mechanical design in special purpose equipment or manufacturing related field is desirable
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and experience in calculating tolerance stacks
- A good level of experience in 3D modelling of parts, complex assemblies and producing 2D manufacturing drawings. Solid Edge is preferred but not essential
- Sound knowledge of manufacturing processes, Design for Manufacture and an ability to produce both hand calculations and computational simulations to support your designs.
- Knowledge of fabrication techniques and sheet metal design is desirable
- Knowledge in Drives and Controls would be advantageous
- Ability to work in a demanding environment and meeting strict deadlines to a high standard is essential.
- Knowledge of best practice design lifecycle process; gated design phases, design reviews.
- Possess excellent communication skills and want to work in a collaborative atmosphere
