Job Purpose:
To work alongside and support the elected members to ensure that national and regional objectives are delivered and to support the needs of local members whilst raising the profile of the FSB in order to attract new members.

Key Areas of Accountability
Policy & Lobbying
- Identify, research, develop and promote national and local business issues as they arise, including where appropriate, representing the FSB in support of members at external meetings and running policy focused events to raise the FSB’s local profile.
- Create and co-ordinate a regular lobbying programme with local members to develop engagement with locally elected politicians, local authorities and other external bodies in line with national policy.
- Implement campaigns by briefing & supporting local members in the delivery of national & regional objectives.
- Utilise the results of local and national data to identify key business issues in order to support media, advocacy, recruitment and retention activities.
- Develop local knowledge and databases across all political and legislative developments, researching any impacts said departments have on local small business issues.
- Produce briefing papers on local issues, including consultation responses and statistical data for local members, external boards, locally elected politicians and local media contacts to further FSB objectives.
Media
- Develop a strong presence in the local and regional media through working closely with the relevant press departments to deliver the key messages on business issues and national and local campaigns.
- Produce localised press releases and articles for internal and external publications that provide a local interpretation on national and regional policy issues and/or highlight the solutions and benefits that the FSB provide to business.
- Co-ordinate the role as the local contact and spokesperson for the FSB, as well as assisting in the development of members who would be good spokespeople for the FSB.
- Provide local insight by providing case studies and media stories for central use.
- Deliver any nationally agreed social media platforms at a regional level.
Commercial Services
- Develop proactive relationships with the commercial services team, keeping them informed on local activities, sponsorships lobbying and business issues to support sales opportunities, including promoting membership benefits.
- Co-ordinate local promotional events aimed at sales and retention.
- Support the recruitment team in pinpointing all commercial and recruitment opportunities and where appropriate work with them and the regional and branch members to set recruitment/retention goals for local events.
Internal/External Communications
- Provide excellent customer service through effective signposting and provision of relevant information if appropriate when dealing with issues raised by members.
- Through internal and external communication channels, assist in raising awareness, to members of FSB services and benefits which support their business.
- Manage engagement levels with active members within the FSB and the wider non-active members to support the FSB’s member led structures.
- Take ownership of the region’s web content, co-ordinating activity for development and submitting materials to Commercial Services for the updating of web pages.
- Encourage and support the development of regional plans by the members.
Undertakes other duties relevant to the Department’s activities commensurate with the level of the post and as directed by the appropriate line manager.
Skills & Experience
Skills - Excellent verbal, listening and written communication. Strong influencing skills. Ability to present complex information to a wide range of audiences. Strong planning and time management skills; able to prioritise your work, balance conflicting deadlines, and deal with urgent issues at short notice as well as longer term policy initiative.
Experience - The Development Manager role requires incumbents to develop a broad range of skills across various business areas so candidates from a wide range of backgrounds may be considered.
