Communications Support Worker for Hearing Impaired Learners - 14 Hours per week, Term-Time Only

Newcastle & Stafford Colleges Group is financially one of the strongest of its kind in the country with very high success rates, amongst the top 10% nationally.

In November 2016 Newcastle-under-Lyme College merged with Stafford College to form the Newcastle & Stafford Colleges Group. The group is currently home to a population of over 5,000 full-time students and around 620 students on higher education programmes. We have over 2,000 part-time or adult learners and 2,000 apprentices where we work with over 800 individual employers.

Primarily responsible for providing appropriate language support for deaf or hearing impaired learners, you will work closely with Tutors and Lead Support Tutors to ensure that learners with a hearing impairment learn as effectively as possible and achieve their full potential. In addition, you will contribute to the development and production of specialist resources for use with learners with a Hearing Impairment as well as providing advice and contributing to learners' Individual Learning Plans and Support Plans. You will also encourage acceptance and inclusion of all learners through promotion of deaf awareness to peer groups or staff.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To provide appropriate language support for deaf or hearing impaired learners whether it be British Sign Language or Signed Support English.
  • To contribute to the development and production of specialist resources.
  • You will seek appropriate evidence to support an application for Special Considerations for learners with Hearing Impairment.
  • You will work with the Lead Support Tutor, feeder schools, Connexions, parents and learners to plan the transition of a learner from the feeder school to the college.
  • To work closely with Tutors and Lead Support Tutors to provide advice and contribute to learners Individual Learning Plans.
  • Makes sessions notes which relate to the learner's progress, write incident reports when required and complete any paperwork which is deemed necessary to support the learner.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • has experience of supporting learners with a hearing impairment and be qualified in The Council of Advancement of Communication with Deaf People.
  • To have level 3, British Sign Language and hold a (CACDP) Communication Support Worker Qualification.
  • is confident in advising others on issues relating to deafness and the educational needs of deaf pupils.
  • is empathetic and sensitive to differing viewpoints.
  • is committed to inclusion and inclusive practice.
