Public Health England (PHE) is an executive agency of the Department of Health providing; strategic leadership, research, advice and support for Government, local authorities and the NHS in protecting and improving the nation's health. An opportunity now exists for four trainee Radiation Protection Specialists to support PHE's Radiation Protection Services.
PHE's Radiation Protection Services are operated out of the Centre for Chemical, Radiation and Environmental Hazards with a wide range of consultancy, training and technical services being provided to users of radiation (both ionising and non-ionising) in industry, medicine, research and teaching. The experience gained from the provision of these services provides an important input to the standards and development work of PHE and supports national emergency response arrangements. PHE is seeking to recruit four Trainee Radiation Protection Specialists. Successful applicants will embark on a comprehensive development programme leading, initially, to certification as Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) followed by further development in a range of radiation protection specialisms.
In the course of the development programme post holders support and gain experience in:
• The provision of radiation protection consultancy services, including RPA and Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWA), to a wide range of external clients. This work will include making visits to client premises, undertaking radiation measurements, analysing radiation protection problems, finding solutions and preparing clear and authoritative advice.
• PHE's Dental X-Ray Protection Service (DXPS).
• Providing input to PHE-CRCE's wide range of user and professional level training events on ionising radiation.
• Participation in PHE'S emergency response arrangements.
• Radiation Project work.
The posts call for confident, outgoing individuals with effective communication, inter-personal and time-management skills. The ability to provide timely and consistent high-quality advice, both verbally and in writing, for a range of different radiation applications, is essential.
For appointment to these posts applicants must hold either a BSc or MSc in a physical science, or an academic equivalent. Consideration may be given to applicants with previous experience in operational radiation protection plus A Levels in mathematics and science. A full UK driving license is required.
These trainee posts are available at both Chilton in Oxfordshire and in Leeds. Expressions of preference for a preferred location will be considered but preferences cannot be guaranteed. PHE provides radiation protection services across the UK out of offices in Leeds, Chilton and Glasgow; once training is complete there may be opportunities for post holders to transfer to one of the other PHE locations.
