Working for a local NHS hospital, you will research/collate/investigate information about patients who visit hospital, investigating all aspects of their journey from start to finish.

Use the special alphanumeric code you've been trained in and record everything on the computer system.

These records can be understood throughout the NHS and used to plan for future patient care.

There is a detective element of your job:

• Analyse clinical statements and assign standard codes using a classification system
• Use a set of published codes on medical diagnoses and procedures, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or the Common Coding System for Healthcare Procedures (HCPCS), for reporting to the health insurance provider of the recipient of the care
• Good knowledge of medical terminology, clinical documentation, legal aspects of health information, health data standards, classification conventions, and computer- or paper-based data management
• To classify medical and health care concepts using a standardised classification
• Abstraction - Assignment - Review - Competency levels
