Senior Database Service engineer (Oracle, Support, Testing, Linux, SQL) - DBA
Salary: GBP45,600 - GBP50,400
Location: Worthing

We are expanding our VOA Delivery Group and are recruiting into a number of posts within the Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Service in Worthing.

Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS) was set up in 2015 as a subsidiary of HMRC's Chief Digital & Information Officer Group and has one of the largest customer bases in the world. The growth of RCDTS over the last few years, has included the establishment of the VOA Delivery Group in 2016 to provide services from design through build to run for the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), a key agency within the HMRC. This is an exciting time for our organisation as we embark on a bold plan to make HMRC, including the VOA, one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world.
The VOA Delivery Group comprises a team of technology experts working on essential IT projects developing innovative solutions in support of the VOA's digital front-end to improve resilience and performance for its user services. Its focus is on collaboration with other internal technology teams, VOA departments and external suppliers to deliver value for money.
We design, build and run services that are based on a range of historical and current technologies, embracing Open Source and Cloud to provide the platforms on which the VOA can drive forward their vision for a modernised business operation.
To accomplish this we employ experienced subject matter experts in both the technology and the business streams who work together with a wide range of IT functional experts as an agile, flexible team.
Our strategic VOA Digital development centre is located in Worthing, Sussex.

About the Senior Database Service engineer (Oracle, Support, Testing, Linux, SQL) role
The successful candidate will be placed in a Service Ops team. You will be expected to be involved in all aspects of Database Management. You will build and maintain MySQL and Oracle databases in Unix and Linux environments and will be expected to work within both Project and a Service operation roles across the development to service life-cycle as required.
Role requirements for the Senior Database Service engineer (Oracle, Support, Testing, Linux, SQL)
The post holder will be responsible for the following:
•Supporting a team of database service engineers including mentoring less experienced engineers in team activities
•Monitoring work assigned to the database services team enabling delivery to an appropriate level
•Authoring and applying procedures to enact data modifications and database structure changes
•Investigating complex incidents following agreed procedures using appropriate software and tools either in co-operation with other support teams or alone
•Identifying, applying and testing fix solutions
•Review and maintain documentation for databases, updates, releases and incident resolutions
•Supporting patch implementation to databases as required
•Monitor performance, identify, collect and report agreed performance data and investigate anomalies as necessary
•Carrying out routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products.
•Maintains effective relationships with support and development teams providing a high level of customer service
•Development and implementation of backup and recovery strategies
•Maintains a watch on database capacity, planning and executing updates as necessary
•Supports and advises on disaster recovery planning and testing when required
•Supports Out of hours maintenance and on-call cover as appropriate
•Sanitises data for training, dev and test according to procedure
•Provision and configuring of dev/test environments
•Reviews and keeps processes, work instructions, LSMs and other documentation up to date as needed
•Suggesting, and working on, improvements to the databases in order to improve efficiency or reliability without changing business functionality
Essential criteria for the Senior Database Service engineer (Oracle, Support, Testing, Linux, SQL) role
As well as demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills at all levels, with a positive 'can do' attitude, the candidate will be experienced in the following:
•Experience of Unix and Linux environments
•MySQL installation and Configuration
•Knowledge of Oracle 10g and above
•Database backup and recovery
•Working on high-volume/distributed systems
•The full software development lifecycle
•Agile / Scrum Projects, with the proven ability to work in a team environment under pressure to deliver quality products to tight deadlines.
•Oracle database development experience (SQL and schema design)
•Experience of source control systems (Git)
•Experience of Agile tooling such as Jira and Confluence
Desirable criteria
•Knowledge of Atlassian toolset (e.g. JIRA, Confluence, etc)
•Oracle RAC
•Unix Shell scripting
•Ability to create, seek and act upon opportunities to obtain and share knowledge
•Continuous Integration and Deployment methodology and tooling using Bamboo or similar
Equivalent SFIA level4
