Database Service Engineer (Test, Support, ITIL) - Senior Job Summary

The Database Service Engineer (Test, Support, ITIL) - Senior is responsible to the Database Service Engineer Lead enabling the maintenance and support of development, test and Live database systems for the assigned applications that enables them to stay fully functioning within the agreed service levels. Support includes investigation and resolution of any issues as well as monitoring performance and enacting corrections and providing advice to users, development and support teams. S/he may be called upon to collaborate with developers or other specialist colleagues to define enhancements or support problem resolution.

Key responsibilities are:
•Supporting a team of database service engineers including mentoring less experienced engineers in team activities
•Monitoring work assigned to the database services team enabling delivery to an appropriate level
•Authoring and applying procedures to enact data modifications and database structure changes
•Investigating complex incidents following agreed procedures using appropriate software and tools either in co-operation with other support teams or alone
•Identifying, applying and testing fix solutions
•Review and maintain documentation for databases, updates, releases and incident resolutions
•Supporting patch implementation to databases as required
•Monitor performance, identify, collect and report agreed performance data and investigate anomalies as necessary
•Carrying out routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products.
•Maintains effective relationships with support and development teams providing a high level of customer service
•Development and implementation of backup and recovery strategies
•Maintains a watch on database capacity, planning and executing updates as necessary
•Supports and advices on disaster recovery planning and testing when required
•Supports Out of hours maintenance and on-call cover as appropriate
•Sanitises data for training, dev and test according to procedure
•Provision and configuring of dev/test environments
•Reviews and keeps processes, work instructions, LSMs and other documentation up to date as needed
•Suggesting, and working on, improvements to the databases in order to improve efficiency or reliability without changing business functionality

Knowledge and Skills of the Database Service Engineer (Test, Support, ITIL) - Senior

•An awareness of the end to end Project lifecycle
•An awareness of ITIL Service delivery
•An awareness of how service support technologies and processes are changing specifically with respect to database technologies
•An awareness of the development lifecycle incl. Agile and Dev Ops processes
•An awareness of the service introduction/transition lifecycle
•An understanding of the service change management processes and procedures
•An understanding of the VOA and/or VTS database systems being supported including and awareness of the applications accessing the databases
•An understanding of service support principles and methodologies specifically around database systems management
•An understanding of the development, testing and live database topology and infrastructure to be supported and used
•An understanding of database design principles
•Appreciates the wider business context, and how own role relates to other roles and to the business of the employer or client.

•Ability in Database systems administration
•Ability to use and navigate the database platform's operating systems applying associated scripting and integrating query languages as necessary
•Ability to configure and troubleshoot supported database systems
•Trained in the use of the CM tools and processes.

•Plans, schedules and monitors own work (and that of others where applicable) competently within limited deadlines and according to relevant legislation, standards and procedures.
