Senior Power Electronics Engineer (Hardware, Embedded, Design)

Senior Power Systems Design Engineer required by world leading manufacturer of specialist high-tech low-volume electronic and electromechanical systems. The main objectives of this post are design of power electronics and specification of motors for new products along with research into new drive technologies for actuation.

Responsibilities
- Conducting research and carrying out feasibility studies into new methods of valve actuation and the evaluation of relevant new technologies
- Design of electronic hardware and software for company products with a focus on power systems, including the preparation of such records as may be necessary to demonstrate compliance with its associated specification and any relevant standards
- Specification and analysis of motors for company products
- Production of specifications for new products including associated project plans and test programs
- Supervision of other personnel including other engineers, apprentices and contractors
- Undertaking of design reviews, audits and testing to ensure that the company designs and products comply with specifications and relevant standards
- Generation of progress and other reports required by the Electronics Design Manager
- Ensuring the availability of design records and documentation and to assist with the production of Sales and Service literature
- Liaison with suppliers, customers and other departments throughout the company including such visits as may be required both in the UK and overseas
- Provision of technical support to Sales, Service, Production, Buying and Quality departments as required
- Undertaking of project management and co-ordination duties as and when required

Candidate Specification:
- Ability to work as a member of a small team to tight time and cost targets is essential
- The candidate should have proven experience working in a research field, with knowledge of the scientific method of investigation
- The candidate should be self-motivated with good practical skills and thorough approach to her/his work
- The successful candidate will be required to liaise with both suppliers and customers which may in turn necessitate occasional travel
- A high level of interpersonal skills will be required

Competencies:
- Minimum Hons Degree or equivalent in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
- Minimum 6 years in industry since qualification undertaking design and development work

- Knowledge of, or experience in the following fields would be desirable:
- Power electronics for both low- and high-voltage mains systems including silicon MOSFETs and emerging technologies such as GaN
- Motor inverter design including thermal and EMC considerations
- Device selection and datasheet analysis in order to find an optimal part considering potentially conflicting constraints
- Analogue circuit design (e.g. signal amplification/conditioning)
- Motor specification and analysis
- Software design using high level languages such as C or C++ for embedded microcontrollers
- Designs to meet internationally recognised approvals standards
- Design for volume manufacture
- Test automation / modelling using scripting languages such as python
- CAD systems in particular DxDesigner/Pads
