Our Collins Learning division are looking for a Commissioning Editor to join the team for a maternity cover. This role will involve assisting the senior commissioning staff across a broad range of publishing projects for both primary and secondary markets, in all aspects of the commissioning process and with particular emphasis on manuscript development, author liaison and project leadership.
This is a great opportunity to make a crucial contribution to the successful development of the Home Learning and Keen Kite businesses, and acquire experience in market-focused product development for a diverse range of sectors. This position can be based in Honley, Scotland or London.
Responsibilities
Assist publisher and commissioning editors in preparing new publication proposals
Commission and brief authors and project managers to deliver to specification
Act as the in-house QA stakeholder and champion for agreed projects
Liaise with freelance project managers to keep projects on track and communicate progress internally
Review draft manuscripts and commission peer reviews, liaising with authors over revisions
Check sample manuscript / manuscript conforms to the agreed brief
Set up plan G records / metadata
Raise contracts and purchase orders
Prepare for handover of final manuscripts for project management to Creative Services
Database and supplier management using e-procurement systems
Editorial tasks such as competitor research, plotter proof checking, writing cover briefs
Develop sample pages, concepts and design template, with colleagues
Prepare for events and conferences including liaising with sales reps and organising marketing materials
Liaise with marketing colleagues on the creation and checking of appropriate marketing materials
Key Skills/Experience
A degree in a relevant subject
Knowledge of digital and traditional publishing processes
Understanding of project and schedule management
Organised, with good attention to detail
Editorial skills, including text mark-up on paper and online
Good general IT skills
Comfortable with learning to use new software and systems
Ability to work collaboratively, proactively and independently
Author briefing skills
A team player with strong communication and people skills
Creative and positive, with an appetite to learn and contribute
We're based in the News Building which we share with our News UK and Dow Jones colleagues in the newly-established London Bridge Quarter, opposite the famous Borough Market.
