Laboratory Technician
location: Milton Keynes
Salary range: £7.50ph increasing to £8.50ph upon completion of training

The Organisation offer a suite of services to researchers involved in studies that collect and process samples from human subjects. These services enable existing studies to be undertaken more effectively and the scale of its operation enables new studies to begin that were not previously feasible or affordable. Having established its core infrastructure, NIHR-NBC is expanding the range of services it offers to the biomedical community.

The Role
We are looking for individuals that have basic laboratory skills and an interest in working in the life sciences sector. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, as a laboratory technician you will perform a variety of tasks, which includes but is not limited to, manual and automated liquid handling tasks, sample preparation and reformatting and nucleic acid extraction, quantification and normalisation.

You will be trained in how to operate and maintain laboratory equipment, both manual and automated) as well as understanding the importance of complying with laboratory standard operating procedures, ISO quality system and Health and Safety procedures. This role provides an ideal grounding in laboratory skills, data management and experience with working with state-of-the-art automation platforms in the context of a service laboratory supporting work from both the academic and commercial sector.

The Person
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to work as part of a small team and show that you can plan, organise and control a number of different activities. You will be required to clearly demonstrate understanding of ideas and instructions communicated to you and must be self-motivated. You will be required to work in a collaborative style both in approach to your own area of work and also help support other members of the team.

You will have excellent communication skills and be able to converse with people at all levels and build positive working relationships with other members of the team. This role will suit either an individual who is already experienced in working in a similar role or looking to work in a laboratory environment.

Working Pattern
The standard working hours are 35 per week which are worked on a 7 hour, 5 day rota shift basis. The shift rota covers 6 days. This means you may be required to work on a weekend shift. Shifts run either 09:00-17:00 or 11:00-19:00 depending on allocation.
