Our client is a non-maintained specialist school for children with autistic spectrum disorders and related conditions and they are recruiting for Appointed Governors. Dedicated individuals with time to volunteer to support the school should have experience of primary and/or secondary education and an interest in SEN would also be desirable. 

Purpose of the Governing Body

Governors use their experience and expertise to support and guide the senior leadership of the School but also challenge them and hold them to account for the management of the School, the quality of the teaching and learning and the achievement, wellbeing and safety of pupils and students. They oversee the financial performance of the School and make sure resources are well spent.

The Governing Body is accountable for the way in which the school is directed and managed and have responsibility for ensuring the School complies with its statutory responsibilities and that it operates in line with Trust policies and procedures, particularly those around safeguarding. Governors also approve and monitor any service specific policies, ensuring that these supplement and enhance corporate policies.

Responsibilities of the Governing Body

The role of the Governing Body is a strategic one. Its key functions are to:

• Set the aims and objectives for the school
• Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
• Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
• Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
• Be a source of support and challenge to the Headteacher (a critical friend)

The Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the Governing Body.
