Principal Engineer (Mechanical Assurance)

Would you like to play a key role in the assurance of submarine systems? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer (Mechanical Assurance) at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Engineer (Mechanical Assurance), you will be providing the Chief Engineer (Assurance and Safety) with technical assurance advice relevant to a number of mechanical submarine systems such as: Naval Reactor Plant (NRP), Propulsion and Platform systems and associated equipment, procedures, transversals and standards that have an impact on mechanical systems and equipment operation, performance and safety; whole submarine platform systems. You will be responsible for ensuring that the design intent meets the stated contract requirements, is safe to operate and compliant with statutory legal and regulatory requirements.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer (Mechanical Assurance) will involve:
Reviewing plans for surveillance and audit for all aspects of the submarine mechanical activities and systems including through life capability and support
Working closely with QA, QC, Engineering, Dockside Test Organisation (DTO), Projects and MoD in delivering assurance against design intent for build and commissioning phases of submarine production including process instructions, workmanship standards and risk assessments applicable to the scope of work and to obey all HS&E rules and control measures
Compiling assurance evidence through review, surveillance and audit of mechanical systems design, build, commissioning, and certification activities, as required by the Technical Assurance Programme
Conducting assurance of sub-contractors and supplier design and build activities and outputs, as required by the Technical Assurance programme

Your skills and qualifications:
Essential
Demonstrable knowledge and experience of safety and engineering life cycles applied to maritime platforms within comparable safety critical industries
Mechanical system design experience gained from a complex engineering environment
Degree or equivalent qualification or experience within Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline
Desirable
Demonstrable knowledge and experience of safety and engineering life cycles applied to maritime platforms within comparable safety critical industries
Experience of marine/ defence industry
Chartered engineer or working towards

The ability to influence others and able to put forward a clear, concise and credible reasoning to support engineering decisions
To have experience of design proving, product verification, build surveillance and/or product assurance and qualification activities
We are looking for an autonomous, motivated person. Taking responsibility for your own work, you will be confident to work without immediate supervision to ensure the swift and accurate delivery of high quality work
