Laboratory Informatics Developer (Bioinformatician) (Fixed Term)

£34,956-£46,924

Department/Location: MRC Cancer Unit

Ref: SK12699

The MRC Cancer Unit (MRC CU) is a University Department situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It provides an outstanding environment for cancer research, supporting some 10 research groups and ~150 bench scientists. The MRC CU's focus is to conduct world-leading research to understand how cancers develop and seeks to translate this knowledge into new approaches for diagnosis and treatment. The unit is a key participant in the Cambridge Cancer Centre, providing an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with Cambridge colleagues in the biological, physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

Applications are invited to apply for a Laboratory Informatics Developer position working as part of an established translational research programme within the MRC Cancer Unit and headed by Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald. The focus is on novel endoscopic and non-endoscopic tools for the early detection of Barrett's related neoplasia and molecular biomarkers for risk stratification. The laboratory produces large quantities of sample, clinical and experimental data, including whole genome sequencing.

The post holder will be based primarily within the Clinical Informatics Office, Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, and will be responsible for developing the lab's data management approaches. This will include:

  • Adopting and developing code for management of clinical data, stored in Open Clinica and LabKey databases
  • Implementing a system for tracking laboratory samples and reagents
  • Implementing systems for integrated data views of clinical and laboratory data
  • General responsibility for the Lab's data management strategy.

The post holder will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a scientific/mathematics discipline, have excellent communication skills (written and oral) and be highly motivated.

The role is highly collaborative, and will require close interaction with Laboratory scientists, Clinical Nurses, Bioinformatics scientists and other members of support staff. We are seeking applicants experienced in developing data management solutions, especially in a laboratory environment.

Fixed-Term: This position is CRUK funded and available for 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant would be appointed at an appropriate point on the University of Cambridge salary scale.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check. This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
