Senior Commercial Lawyer

Consumer is a vital part of the BT business with over 15 million customers.
To help drive the future development and success of BT's fibre broadband, digital, voice, mobile and TV businesses, BT now wishes to appoint a Senior Commercial Lawyer with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience to join the BT Consumer Innovations and Strategic Partners team on a temporary contract basis for a period of up to 6 months.
This role will report directly to the Head of Legal - Brand, Customer Care and Mobile and work closely with Legal, Governance & Compliance (LGC) peers.
The role will support senior stakeholders in BT's Brand, Marketing, Customer Care and Mobile business units in the implementation of the key strategic priorities for BT Consumer. This role will involve advising on contract law queries and leading negotiations on a range of key strategic commercial agreements across the Marketing, Brand, Customer Care and Mobile business units.
Ideal candidates will be individuals who have experience of leading a deal team through negotiations on complex, high value, strategically significant contracts and in the project management and delivery of large scale projects in the telecommunications, media and IT sectors. They will also have a demonstrable track record in producing high quality and effective legal advice, an interest in developing your knowledge of BT's mobile, customer care and marketing/brand businesses and an excellent understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in which BT operates.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide advice on commercial risks to facilitate maximum competitive advantage and minimum compliance exposure, providing appropriate solutions/alternatives and facilitating sound commercial risk management;
• Demonstrate leadership skills and manage key operational interfaces, taking ownership for the resolution of issues, prioritising support and identifying where the Innovation and Strategic Partners team can add maximum value;
• Have outstanding drafting skills, negotiating skills, and extensive transactional experience including the management of acceptable contractual risk;
• Build robust relationships with key internal clients through strong interpersonal skills. The job holder will be required to have a deep understanding of BT Consumer's business objectives and will provide high quality customer focused service to the team. The job holder will be expected to operate at senior levels of the business and be comfortable dealing with internal and external senior executives on a range of issues and be able to effectively manage conflict in a fast paced environment;
• Provide first line legal and regulatory advice and/or working with other commercial/legal role holders on transactions, projects and propositions; coordinating other specialist input (e.g. data, risk, insurance, tax, treasury), providing a commercial assessment of such specialism input and making decisions where appropriate;
• Contribute to key discussions and decisions across the customer care, mobile, media and brand teams, leading on areas which require independent, business-focused legal advice to help drive business performance;
• Act as lead negotiator and be responsible for managing an industry-leading legal and contractual negotiating team that focuses on the commercial objectives and be aware of current developments / the external market in key commercial transactions;
• Provide sound, common sense advice, guidance and judgement to the commercial stakeholders on projects and transactions including risk analysis on legal and commercial questions, and on all legal issues relevant to their area, including strategy, structure, and overall risk profile; and
• Develop best practice in commercial contracting including through training for the business units and through participation at pan BT legal initiatives.
