About us:

At Bath Spa University we work with one clear vision: to be a leading university in creativity, culture and enterprise. Transforming the lives of our socially engaged global students starts with making sure that our people, people like you, are engaged, empowered and feel valued for the hard work they do. And that’s where you come in.

The Bath Spa Institute for Education is a place where Bath Spa teachers, classroom teachers, education practitioners, academics, and everyone interested in education comes together in a community of research and practice.  We are using the latest technologies to create our Institute for Education, bringing together practitioners, educationalists, classroom teachers, governors with leading edge researchers to look at what really works in schools.

About the role:

You will be working as part of a 6 person support team, primarily based at the Newton Park campus.  Your specific responsibility will include the support of PGCE Secondary Science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Practical Sciences) & Secondary Design Technology teaching sessions.  We are looking for a candidate with a broad based knowledge of the Secondary Science curriculum, with the ability to support all 3 disciplines: Chemistry, Biology and Physics, to a high standard. Our Secondary courses will be located at our Newton Park & Culverhay sites, so it is important that you have access to your own transport as travelling to satellite locations will be a requirement of this role.

Your main responsibilities will be the preparation & instalment of resources/equipment, to facilitate teaching sessions. Your duties will cover a wide range of skills, such as:  safe maintenance of workshop machinery, self-lead research for sourcing teaching materials/resources, construction & handling of raw materials, chemicals to build apparatus for experiments, producing & monitoring Risk Assessments & Health and Safety COSHH documentation (including the correct use and disposal of regulated/hazardous materials), stock procurement (where you will be required to source competitive prices, meet a set budget and liaise with suppliers and or contractors).

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the full range of Secondary subject knowledge, ideally having previously worked within a School Laboratory & Workshop environment, be confident and competent in handling chemicals, science apparatuses. Training and support will be provided to the successful candidate during the Probationary period to enable support for the Design Technology Workshop materials & machinery.  Previous experience with using or supporting CAD software would also be advantageous.

You will also be responsible for the general support of AV/ICT equipment (Hardware & Software) and the support of teaching spaces for the Institute for Education. All team members set up equipment for lectures and seminars and loan equipment to staff and students.  You will need to be confident in the use of Laptops, iPads, Swivl cameras & Interactive Whiteboards, using software such as Network Sentry, ISO & Windows updates & Camtasia, have the ability to troubleshoot technical problems, and demonstrate the use of equipment to staff and students.

You will also be involved in the general running and security of the technician’s base, where you will respond to emails and telephone enquiries and book Work Management requests. The team produce documentation via Google Docs & populate a team calendar, to monitor workflow & generic support requests. You will also complete general office duties, like AV/IT equipment maintenance, the inventory of stock, and maintain photocopiers.

About you:

The successful candidate will need to be resourceful, adaptable, with excellent organizational & interpersonal skills. This role demands periods of intensive support so the successful candidate will be working across inter-site campuses, where their role will respond to the drive of the teaching demands.  This will require a confident and skilled candidate, who is able to adapt to loan working environments & multi-disciplinary teaching content.
